Cover versions that render the original redundant

Forums: The Bar,

and maybe remixes, too...

Joe Cocker's version of With a Little Help from my friends leaves Ringo's version in the dust!

o m g --- I can't remember who did the cover but Gene Pitney's Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart is the Coolest Song Ever.

I vowed to sing it at my 21st. I didn't. But I will, one day.

Nick Cave

oh, and Gene Pitney did a version with Marc Almond that is probably best forgotten.

// Marc Almond

sounds like the one. mmmm, yes.

I LIKE that one!

//The Bar » Songs that should never be covered » And Ella Fitzgerald's version of "In the Sunshine of your Love" is so good that it might be time to start another thread-"Cover versions that render the original redundant"

The Rockers Hi Fi remake is very nice but I guess I wouldn't go so far as to say it renders the original redundant

Thinking of Marc Almond, Soft Cell's 'Tainted Love' slays the original...

Dunno about the redundant thing, but I always think of Cat Power's version of 'Satisfaction' as an amazing cover. Very different vibe for the same set of lyrics.

¿slays gloria jones?- ahrm- er- no- i love both- but glorias slightly more

jonny cash doing alot of songs, ones that come to mind especcialy are his versions of "hurt" and "one" done originaly by nine inch nails and U2 respectivly

yeah! and 'rusty cage' is way cool

that last album of his (with all the covers) is a work of genius

American IV? It has 'Hurt' and some other frankly terrible choices

Travis' version of Britney Spears Baby One More Time - mind you any cover version of this song would have made the original redundant........

neh

Has anyone else heard Mr Bungle's version of this? Basically a wheezy synth, drunk Mike Patton singing like a mentally impaired child molester (with a few lyrics changes - "My lonelyness is killing Mike" etc.) and someone else on off-key backing vocals. Far better than the original.

the k&d sessions remix of lamb - trans fatty acid.

and i like cat power - i found a reason.

// cat power - i found a reason

That's a thing of beauty, for sure.

I remember there was an early 90s tribute album to the Velvet Underground... a bunch of different bands - Nirvana, James, Ride - and it was pretty poo. Used to be in the Welli library, but probably nicked by now.

Anyway, having heard that it makes me all the more impressed that someone managed to do a decent VU cover.

//a decent VU cover
Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane

nice production
but i like the velvets cover
way better

The Flaming Lips! 'Can't Get You Outta My Head' definitely renders the original redundant

magazine doin' i love you you big dummy

Hmm.. I reckon Kylie's version is much better, probably one of the best songs of that year. But then I don't get the Flaming Lips. The Postal Service's cover of one of their tracks is lousy tho.

Orgy's cover of Blue Monday.

Heresy, man!

come on man, the original sucked. even their 88 remix tore strips off the first version.

actually i like the original.. orgy's version was good, but it added nothing, except for gothing it up a little...

ok, maybe sucked was harsh. i think the orgy version added a lot. the original was kinda dull muted, the orgy version made it dynamic, made it interesting.

more close calls

is the cramps version of fever going up against willie johns ? ya gotta give it to the illiterate midget, he needs your love so bad --

ok she was my tutor when i was young- & yes we had a brief wild fling- but i havent done her for a long time

//rod stewart- the 1st cut is the deepest

But he missed a line out of the chorus and totally wrecked it. And then some chick did it recently and covered the Rod Stewart cover (missing out the line again).

Not saying it is better but Talking Heads Take me to the River is pretty damn good. But I like Al Green's version too. It's a good song.

al greens ¿how can you mend a broken heart?

And one of my favourite CDs is "Rythym, Country and Blues" Got lots of cool covers of classic songs, mostly duets, by some great performers. Aaron Neville, Little Richard, Allan Toussaint (sp), Conway Twitty, BB King ...

Just wonderful versions of great songs. Recommended *****

solomon burke doin' proud mary !!!

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (orginally by Leonard Cohen)
Richard Thompson - Oops! I Did It Again (he turns a slice of pop cheese into quite a passionate acoustic folk-rocker - with some excellent solos, as always from Rick)

And then there's FischerSpooner' rendition of Wire's The 15th.

And then there's Fairport Convention's version of The Ballad of Easy Rider, which kicks the original in the groin. Having the great Richard Thompson on guitar, the track is absolute genius.

pseudo echo-funky town, although Andrew Adamson did good work for the original on shrek 2
in popular consciousness, the byrds version of tamborine man has buried the original
a similar example is hendrix's version of 'all along the watchtower'.
twist and shout-Isley Brothers -fairly forgotten
booby mcferren's version of 'sunshine of your love'

anything by moog cookbook.

word.

Or anything by the leningrad cowboys.

Faith No More with 'Easy'... kind of a joke that wouldn't go away

They started a joke that started the whole world crying.
