Neil Finn

This is the general discussion forum for Neil Finn

Forums: Bands,

I think Neil is excellent! I ve been a fan since I was 13 years old, I'm now 17. I don't care that people think I'm strange, I love not following the crowd!

Oooh yes wow, you're original, you like one of NZ's most popular and influential artists, how stange.

But Neill Finn is awesome. He is a legend.

haha that was so called for

To the gents who took time out to pick on a teenager...I know this might sound strange, but with NZ being a small island nation on the other side of the world from a lot of english speaking nations, Neil Finn isn't necessarily as well known as he is in NZ. So a 17-year-old in the UK might actually be out of step with his/her friends despite his/her obviously excellent taste.

Always a pleaure Mr Finn - You are a legend!

um bass b1tch? why is that strange? :-s why does no one post here? neil is wonderful... a book has just been brought out of all his lyrics, which is interesting, because i've never really read through his lyrics before.

i love the spelling of his website...hehehehe

a very cute pisstake :-)

a very cute pisstake :-)

Neil Finn rox.

Dis is a loverley song...

She will have her way is good but i like last to know of one nil that was a great song

It also sounds good on the seven worlds collide album it sounded great

*several years later* In bass b1tches defense, she is from England....where I'm sure it's not AS expected to love him...as we kiwis love him. Mmmm Neiiillllll

been living in the UK for about 6 years, and it is pretty sad to like Neil Finn, however since he has played with the Brit hero Marr, Neil Finn has become somewhat hip in the mod circles....
Strange....

He is NZ top song writer in my opinion, and I hate mod/indie bands!!!

Mr N. Finn is about to commence his US tour. I thought I'd just mention that his gig in Boston (July 19) is already sold out a month in advance!! Admittedly its not a huge venue (about the size of Indigo in Welly), but still - fairly amazing. I've noticed the occasional Split Enz song playing on the radio of late, and the movie, Rain, featuring music by Neil has been playing here for the last month.

Well done Neil.

Go Neil! By the way, that Rain Soundtrack CD is AWESOME! There are some real Gems on there, especially the songs that Neil Collaborates with Ed Cake! I'd definately recommend it to any Finn or Bressa Creeting Cake Fans out there! two of this counties songwriting genius' together on one album.

The Rain soundtrack arrived in my mailbox yesterday and is now on repeat play! Any news on whether Ed Cake is doing anything new?

interview with the man.
on a major american website, no less. (Neil finn is a sellout!! his music sucks! he's on an american website, what a soulless corporate bastard!!!!!)

Dear Jimi

If you can declare that every piece of music you like is by an artist that is not on a major label, not distributed by a major company, not managed by a major management group, not toured by major promotors, not available in major corporate record stores, and not played on corporate radio then I can personally certify that you are not a hypocrite.

I find it easier to judge an artist by the quality of their work. In the case of Neil, I find the music he produced for the Rain Soundtrack to be some of the best sounds out of NZ I've heard all year. I think that his collaborations with people like Ed Cake and Lisa Germano have really improved his music, which I had considered a little bland over the past few years.

hehehe dont worry dude. I am exactly the same as you.

everything in brackets is sort of a piss take on the people that really annoy me. good on neil for getting such huge publicity.

//I find it easier to judge an artist by the quality of their work.

for sure, and what sucks is when people 'discriminate' against music because it is 'too corporate' - regardless of what the music is like.

They've got that rain cd here at redeye records. Worth getting then is it? How much is it at real groovy? I might get my mum to get it. My friend will be pissed that his boston show is soled out. I told her to get there early. Still there is always the scalpers.

lovely vid neil. nice acting by the cat too!

Here's what my friend had to say about Neil in Boston.
Yup, last Saturday was the Neil Finn show and, as
predicted, it was excellent. It was in a really small
club, very intimate. He played for nearly 2 & 1/2
hours and he was just perfect. My favorite song I
think was Four Seasons in One Day. He let the
audience sing the chorus and everybody sounded great,
singing in harmonies and everything. The only song I
was hoping for that he didn't play was Distant Sun,
but the rest was so good I can forgive him for that.
We got quite a few Crowded House songs actually. I
was also really impressed with the opening act, Ed
Harcourt. He has a really great voice and is a good
songwriter. I'd never even heard of him before, but
I'm glad Neil brought him along. It was a great,
great show.

Has any one seen the trailor for Rain? If so I'm having a problem you might be able to help me with. I was wondering if anyone knew the name of the song playing in the background at the end of the trailor("What matters is the time we share...I only want to be with you"). I really like it but for the life of me can't find the name of it. Is it on the Rain soundtrack, (couldn't tell from the samples of the disc) or is it from another Finn CD?

All I can add is that it doesn't appear to be on the Rain Soundtrack.

sorry

That would be Finn Junior you're hearing. That's Liam Finn's song for the soundtrack called 'Lucid Dream'

The track features on the CD soundtrack and also as a b-side for Sleepy News or Supa Day, one of the two.

Great, thanks for your help!

As an update, I think the American version of the trailor is different then the one they show overseas because "Lucid Dream" turned out not to be the song, thanks anyways. So the question, I guess, still stands "What's the song playing at the end of the Rain trailor (US version)?". This might not even be a Finn song so maybe its not relevant to this forum, but if anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

Haha OK, of course just after I ask the question I find the answer. Turns out Liam Finn is right, but its not "Lucid Dream", its "Lucy's Song".

I didn't make it to see Neil play the sold out gig in Boston, but managed to catch an instore performance in Newbury Comics on the same day. It was about a half hour set in a shop packed full of adoring fans, many with kids. He performed as a three piece with Lisa Germano playing violin and some other guy plucking a double bass.
Anyway, very nice little set - a mix of material from new and recent Neil Albums.

Sad I couldnt make it to the main event

Neil Finn is apparently playing at the Duxton Hotel in wellington next Wednesday, anyone know how much it is? I assume its probably not going to be cheap since its the Duxton, I heard someone say it was a Charity thing

Well Fran...I have no idea as you know since I asked you BUT today my friend called me to tell me that in the Contact (welli community newspaper) there was an article about Tim's upcoming gigs and there was mention of a gig at the Queens Wharf Events centre on October 3..by NEIL..which is supposed to be something to do with the Fred Hollows foundation. I thought the charity gig was for an orphanage..is it a fred hollows one? Anyways, completely confused as to why no one knows anything I called ticketek (assuming they'd know considering they have an office in Queens Wharf) and they had no idea what I was talking about. WHAT THE HELLLLL????????? NEEEEIIILLLL...

Neil's coming back to the US of A for a second tour of the US released album, 'One All'. Anybody know why the name was changed for the US market? It wasnt like it was called Shihad or anything :)
Speaking from a Boston perspective, he played at a much smaller venue (about 500 capacity) on the previous tour and this was sold out weeks in advance. I wonder how he will do at this bigger venue (about 1000 capacity). The dates are...

28JAN03 Washington, DC, USA 9:30 Club
29JAN03 New York, NY, USA Town Hall
31JAN03 Philadelphia, PA, USA Electric Factory
01FEB03 Boston, MA, USA Avalon
03FEB03 Toronto, ON, Canada Phoenix Room
04FEB03 Detroit, MI, USA St. Andrews
05FEB03 Chicago, IL, USA The Vic
06FEB03 Minneapolis, MN, USA Fine Line
08FEB03 Denver, CO, USA Gothic
10FEB03 San Diego, CA, USA 4th and B
12FEB03 Los Angeles, CA, USA Wiltern
13FEB03 San Francisco, CA, USA Warfield
15FEB03 Portland, OR, USA Roseland
16FEB03 Seattle, WA, USA Showbox
17FEB03 Vancouver, BC, Canada The Commodore

Hallelujah! Minneapolis finally makes the list. The Fine Line is pretty small, it'll probably fill up quickly.

The former title played off the way "Neil" is pronounced at home. Why the name change?

"To confuse people, as I do so often," Finn deadpanned. "Seriously, the album is different from "One Nil" -- it took so long to get it released in America that I wanted to freshen it up a bit.

"I needed to reflect where I am now. It has some different songs and we did a re-mix. It is a fresher, better record and the title indicates that difference. Anyway, I was told that in the States, 'one nil' isn't a familiar phrase, where in other parts of the world it's a common sporting expression."

// Anybody know why the name was changed for the US market?

it was more to do with 9/11. it could have been interpreted that the terrorists were up one-nil.

//'one nil' isn't a familiar phrase, where in other parts of the world it's a common sporting expression."

one-all is any different?

I'm somewhat embarassed to admit the circumstances under which this took place, so I may feel the need to justify myself...

I was working very hard last night, preparing a bit of writing for publication, and I'm a big fan of background noise so I had the television on. I'm easily distracted, and so music doesn't work well when I'm trying to concentrate.

So my attention was caught briefly as one show ended and the announcer said, "This obnoxious teen romance show, which was written specifically for people half your age at best, contained music from Neil Finn's new album, One All. Buy it now!" Or something like that, I wasn't really paying attention. I wasn't watching Dawson's Creek, I swear.

tsk tsk!

Neil must be in line to make it onto Buffy next! :)

Yeah, I wasn't sure it was really the appropriate market for his music, given that the average viewer is 13 years old. Buffy might be more appropriate, but I wouldn't know; I won't even use that show for background noise.

Are you going to see him in Boston when he comes round in February?

Buffy is a VERY good show. Take my word for it.

Hell, The Breeders appeared on Buffy.

Oh, the shame of it all: I was a semi-constant watcher of Dawson's Creek for all of its first season, still watch it sporadically when I can remember its on at 2 on Sunday afternoon (and get up in time!).

Doesn't look like he has made the cut though or didn't want to.
The Lads however did.

http://www.dawsonscreekcds.com ]

Jeez, I can't believe you did research, Stefan. It may not have even been Dawson's Creek, but it was something awfully like it. As I said, I wasn't really watching.

hmm, not really research but coincidence. A website I was at had that site as a news item today.

http://www.showbizdata.com ]

Yeah, I'm a Buffyophile too...I admit it :)
I wasnt surprised about the Breeders being on it, as the last couple of times I've seen them play, they've done a cover of the Buffy theme tune! Aimee Mann was also on it recently, and she just blew me away!

I havent got my tickets yet for Neil in Boston yet, but I'm planning to go (just a little short on cash). I missed his gig last time round as I got surprised by the selling out of the gig months in advance! I did catch a small set he did in Newbury comics, though. Its in a much bigger place this time, so I'm hoping that the same thing wont happen again.

Well, I'm not going to Neil. I rather foolishly waited for payday to get my ticket. And the news is that its SOLD OUT!!
This is at the Avalon Club in Boston which fills 2000 people! 2000 people in Boston want to see Neil! Well done Neil, I am very surprised. Wasnt so suprised when last year he sold out the 650 capacity Paradise club, but this is a whole different ballpark.

I might try at the door to get something, but I'm not that optimistic. Gawwddamn overspending at Christmas!

I'm going. Next thursday at the Fine Line. I'll be sure to tell you all about it.

Yeah, I can't stand that chick either. I remember when I'd visit my grandmother and she was on a soap opera! All grown up and STILL freaky lookin'! lol
