that's been on repeat for the last 1/2 hour here. Mostly seems a bit heavier than the 'pacifier' stuff, although it's hard to judge from a minute and a half of demos.
it was so they would be popular in the states, shihad - jihad (terrorists). nevermind, they're on the right track now. and i dont think it'll affect their sales in the states
They understand the consequences. When Tom told me of the news, that was actually the first thing I checked with him.
Their idea pretty much is that if people like their music, then yay for them. If the people cannot see past their name, then they don't know what they are missing.
Hey I hate to rain on the parade but isn’t this all a bit gutless.
When I think of ‘Shihad’ I also think of ‘Marmite’ and ‘Jandels’ the name has become a New Zealand (and some Aussies will argue Australian) icon………even my mother knows who Shihad are (and she isn’t a bogan btw).
’Shihad’ was a great brand, the type of brand that a lot of New Zealanders identified with, the type of brand that some companies would pay millions for………and amazingly they threw it all away.
Everyone knows the name change was wrong, the band even acknowledged it on their web site but shit happens you should move on, make the most of what you have left and start rebuilding………like they started to do with ‘Pacifier’.
They put in heaps of hard work defending the ‘Pacifier’ name change, touring the name in the states and releasing an album under the name. The whole name change backlash was beginning to subside, they had made some headway (even if it was small) into the American market even managed to get a track on an American motion picture…….but to do an about face and dump their new brand seems fickle and a little ill advised to say the least.
I don’t know……I just think you should stick to your guns, if you want to be seen as credible and sincere, this new move by ‘Pacifier’, or should I say ‘Shihad’ (I don’t know) is neither.
The conspiracy theorist inside me would like to think its all a marketing ploy to increase media interest in the band before the release of their new album or some ‘jump on the bandwagon’ anti American statement, but that would be implying that they had some business savvy or spine, which after this latest move I considerable doubt.
Sorry to be a wet blanket, just trying to look at the other side of the coin.
Doesn't it take balls to admit (to a rather large group of people) that you made a mistake and to change your mind, and do what you think is RIGHT? What would be the point in them continuing to defend a name/brand that, they think, doesn't fit them?
Yeah you're right 'gutless' is a bit harsh, maybe 'stupid' would be a better word.
//What would be the point in them continuing to defend a name/brand that, they think, doesn't fit them?
umm...........the point would be to sustain the American/Australian/world fans they made under the Pacifier name. When they change their name back to Shihad there is going to be alot of fan base re-education needed, which will probably result in some pretty uncomfortable tours thru the southern states of America in the back of a mini van.........de ja vou.................or have they dumped their US fans?
Also credibility with future labels/radio stations etc.
They dont need to keep 'defening a name/brand that, they think, doesn't fit' anymore..........the defending period is long gone, New Zealand and Australia had moved on, which was proved on the Everything tour and BDO circuit.
Yeah, Emm. I think its fair to say that they have pretty much decided to pack in anything outside of NZ/Aust. I dont imagine that they will ever release anything or play live outside of NZ/Aust again. Except, maybe for some expats in the UK.
If people like the music, they will see past the name.
They will be releasing the album (if I remember correctly) in the UK and USA.
I'd say its testament to their will that they admitted they got it wrong, and are gonna move on.
They will not lose anything out of this. If anything, they will only gain support. The people that bagged them for changing the name to Pacifier , and ran away crying, should mostly come back, after the band admitted they were wrong. Then again, if fans ran away because they changed their name, they were not really fans in the first place.
Very recently you said " If they did change it back, it could be seen as being very incensitive. Not just to the US, but to a lot of other people. A mark of disrespect for the 9/11 families and friends."
Now they're not going to lose anything? Which is it?
you're right. i was getting used to pacifier, and although it never sat well with me, they were still the same band. i guess we'll have to wait and see how the "Shihad" albumn looks in american cd stores. honestly i dont see anyone picking up on/being at all concerned by the similarity to jihad
most people who would like shihad's music probably aren't going to be the flag-waving, foreigner-hating redneck sort of americans. The only difficulty, as they found before changing their name, is in getting the music out there - as the people who own the radio stations definitely are the above sort of americans.
I have to say, I'm a little sad. The reversion to Shihad represents to me that they have decided that they have climbed as high as the'yre going to go and they've pretty much decided to do the same things, play to the same audiences etc. Same goes for bringing in GGGarth again. I thought they are better than that and that they could take things further.
Oh well, at least they tried.
There's always Mount Maunganui on new year's eve for the next decade. Hey, it worked for Jordan Luck.
So, "Comfort Me" turned out to not be the giant smash hit anthem to unite a grieving post-9/11 America, and the band's decided that they're getting old and don't want to spend their days living in LA, getting fat on fried chicken and waffles while they desperately try to get big (musically, not arse-wise) in America, so they've decided to focus on their audience in Australian and New Zealand before they get too old to rock hard any more? Mm?
