Muse great, Pluto...............

I went to Muse last night because international artists actually know how to make music and they were utterly mind blowing but before they played Pluto did and..........basically put the whole crowd to sleep. Is this surely the best we have to offer in support of one of the most innovative bands of our time? If so, then I'm right, NZ music is going down the proverbial plughole. NZ music sucks.

Comments

You're saying the entirety of NZ Music sucks because one support act wasn't up to standard?
That's a tad naive.
I don't expect Muse to be avid follers of our scene, thus maybe selecting a relatively bigger name from the NZ shores was their only hope. Maybe they thought they sucked, too.

creep by name....pluto were great actually.

Im pretty sure Festival Mushroom organised the support act and Muse themselves would have had no part in the selection.......thus the tripe we got. I think more than anything this can indicate the lack of decent NZ rock music at the moment....there are bands out there but because of the popularity of Hip-Hop, RnB and pop punk...no one wants to back the rock band and give them a chance to prove themselves.

the promoter organised the support band actually.

creep...that is the funniest shit i have read in ages. "because international artists actually know how to make music", "NZ music is going down the proverbial plughole."..haha

but especially..."muse....one of the most innovative bands of our time?"

you need to get out more.

creep......... how can you listen to that guy from muse wailing like a tortured cat ? let alone pay to endure it.

to pronounce muse as innovative only tells us you have poor taste in music

And what other band sounds like Muse?

um.

erm.

what other band has a wailing cat for a lead singer

are they the only one... oh they are so innovative then..

um

erm

sorry

the question you really need to ask is what do muse sound like.

Man, i would love to see a cat singing :D
You're right, just don't judge an entire band on one members influence.

//the question you really need to ask is what do muse sound like.

Like nails scratching on a black board. Fucking hell people, grow some taste!

there's a couple of other bands who sound the same with every song
is that their "style?"

//the question you really need to ask is what do muse sound like.
nails scratching down a blackboard yes. add to that cutlery slipping on china and getting your teeth drilled.

I like pluto and usually enjoy them live, surprised to hear they weren't that great. wouldn't pass judgement on all nz music from a single off performance by one nz band - particularly when they're the opening act. it's never easy to open for someone else. see killswitch comments below and also the 1.5 hours of rock opera to follow.

...add to that the sound of 1000 drunk japanese tourists busting 'candle in the wind' on the karaoke whilst having knitting needles forcibly inserted into the ear canal all the time having Telecoms hold music coming at you at a mild 1500db

... add to that 230 "medley" car alarms and 97 trolley buses breaking simultaneously.

//... add to that 230 "medley" car alarms and 97 trolley buses breaking simultaneously. //

you only need one of those fuckers...
the joys of learning on the terrace

creep, the last three words of your post really ruined your point here man
before the gig last night I thought pluto would be a great opening act for muse, even though my band was turned down for the slot.
you're right- they really didnt deliver what was needed ahead of a muse performance, but I do wonder how many NZ bands could... it doesnt mean nz music sucks- we have great bands to open for metal bands (subtract, 8ft sativa), for pop bands (brooke fraser et al), for rap outfits (scribe etc) - but it was quite obvious from the moment they announced muse was coming, that we'd have a hard time pulling out a band that would be perfect to open for them.. i initially thought pluto would be a good choice

maybe it's the kind of stuff they play, but pluto they seemed to be getting a lot of shit from the audience during their set (granted, auckland rock crowds are complete wankers most of the time) and I just thought they were far too arrogant and pretentious about the whole thing to warrant the performance they gave, which the audience just didnt buy
it's no surprise when the only crowd noise a support band gets is when they mention the headline act's name, but there just seemed to be so much disdain from the crowd last night- i was just left wondering exactly what had gone wrong

on a positive note, muse were truely amazing to watch. despite being naieve enough to think i could wander up the front with three beers during the first five minutes and wound up wearing them, i had a ball... was stoked that Chris was able to play afterall, as it wouldnt have been the same with Morgan on bass. some more showbiz-era stuff would've been nice, but gawddam those guys can play

kind of ironic that all the kids brough their lighters out during citizen erased and five minutes later when i'm wanting to light a cigarette no one's got one. yah yah nasty smokers

what a fucking gimp.

Please take this into account. Muse are wankers. Headlining acts will always (well 98%) of the time try to make their local support look like shit.

They will make you quieter through the PA, give you house lights or only a few on the rig, they will mix you down, they will endeavour to make you look like shit, so they look good.

Muse would do this.

Some internationals won't do this...but these are more likely to be indie bands who don't go in for that bullshit.

Bro! Pluto sounded fine...they are just plain average.
Please fill us in on your personal experience with Muse and why they are such wankers in your eyes?

because they are.

just look at their guitars.

and no...they would have mixed down pluto. given them half the pa. every intl "major label" artist will do it, why would Muse be an exception. This also makes them wankers.

I see you are very practiced in the art of witty repartee and really know how to back up an argument!

i don't understand how how i am required to back up this argument. Do you think purposefully making the band before you sound weak to make yourself seem better, so arrogant cunts continue to think that "international artists actually know how to make music " is not a wankery thing to do?

Do i need more evidence? Do i need to say that I caught one of the members in the public toilets with George Michael as evidence of their profound wankerness?

I thought this was common knowledge?

It's often called "The Killswitch". Most times it seems to not strictly be the bands themselves doing it, but the soundguy who wants to have that 'big difference' for when he gets to the desk for the main act.

i had thought this was common knowledge as well...but it would seem not.

I do realise that this happens but how do you know it happened last night?
I was there and apart from the house lights being on,which was annoying, their sound was pretty good.

// I do realise that this happens but how do you know it happened last night?

because it ALWAYS happens.

If it ALWAYS happens, then how can you really single out Muse? It's just as likely to be a record company thing as the band themselves. I'm guessing Pluto had their own sound guy there, so surely he's got some control over how it sounds? I was there, I thought Pluto came across brilliantly and sounded fine - both bands did.

haha..I'm not singleing out Muse. I am saying that basically, artists on major labels who let this happen are wankers.

Unfortunately some bands i respect do this. I get sad, cause it sucks, but i lose respect.

I have no fuss if they use less lighting, hey that is cool. But a bands art is their sound, turning them down, giving them less channels, making them sound poos...its like fucking them up the ass.

I lose respect for any band that does this to their support act. NZ bands included.

I don't enough about muse to get upset about them. I just think they are wankers for giving Pluto the house light treatment when they deserve better then that

//I have no fuss if they use less lighting, hey that is cool

//I just think they are wankers for giving Pluto the house light treatment

Bro... im lost as to where you are goin with this.

sorry dude...less lighting and "house lighting" are sperate things.

less lighting would mean maybe only the 4-8 cans on the rig..a couple of channels/faders...but with house lights off. I don't expect topuring bands to offer the support bands the smoke machines, lasers, intelligent lights..etc..etc...

house lighting is the most depressing thing a band can do to their support. Just leaving the full venue lights up, so everybody talks through the bands performance

Ahhh gotcha. Yeah that's a tad shite.
I myself am a culprit of the talk through support.

What about Tool though - perhaps a bad suggestion - but when they toured with The Melvins...
The Melvins had wayyyyy more volume than Tool. It was weird.

funny you bring up that gig...because slim got perhaps the nastiest ever treatment at that show. A friend of mine was mixing it and he'd only been given, i think 4 channels for sound and he had a limit of about a 1/3rd of the PA level that Tool were going to get.

With The Melvins touring with Tool....it would be a diferent arrangement...and I'd like to think The Melvins wouldn't put up with that shit. Tool just saved some extra lighting and crazy antics for their show

//its like fucking them up the ass

--do you mean that in a positive or negative way ?

excuse me?

what were you saying about them being wankers cos of their guitars? Thats just fucking stupid

?

I am calling them wankers for reasons other then their guitars. Hassling their guitars was my attempt at a joke, but has nothing to with them being wankers. Having no clue? yes. Being wankers? not nessecarily.

Muse at BDO reminded me off several rockquest bands I've seen over the years....you know..the ones that dress all in white...paint their faces, paint their guitars, goths in denial, playing popified metal. Muse are the ultimate rockquest band!

Muse would win the stage image award everytime.

//Muse at BDO reminded me off several rockquest bands I've seen over the years

priceless.

//It's often called "The Killswitch".

i've always preferred the term "suck-switch"

quite often it's not the band to blame. i played a show where the soundy said as we were setting up "i saved all the good lights for you guys" and instantly made us feel like complete wankers. Colourful and flashing wankers at that.

I flew from welly to see the show last night and was stoked when i heard that Pluto were supporting, they're definately in my top 5 NZ bands. but something about their set just wasn't right. sure they didn't have strobe-lights and glitter-cannons, but something fundamentaly just wasn't right. I don't -think- it was sabotage from the FOH (any more than usual, that is). it would be interesting to have the opinion of one of the members of Pluto as to whether they think they had an Off Night.

also; all 'yall quit bitchin.

you mean suckbutton

flick the killswitch- press the suckbutton--- ¿how bout lame lever?- ¿can we start using lamelever?

Creep I dont know who you saw last night but i thought that Pluto good and thats coming from someone whos from the uk and has never heard of them before last night. As for your comments on NZ music, mate your talking shite, for a small population you lot have a class music scene and more diversity than a lot of stuff that Im forced to listen too back home.

Pluto were probably just knew after their set that they had to endure an hour and a half of pompous overblown bollocks from 3 neurotic choirboys... I think most bands would have been too gutted to play well...

I was getting down on their mix at all. They actually had a really nice sound especially the drumkit but in all seriousness, they were bland at best.

also- muse know theyre crap- ¿you think theyre gonna do a show & choose a good band?-¿which is gonna show them up as the bullsperm they really are?- no- they chose someone who is marginally worse than mars volta- therefore heaps worse than muse- the killswitch was probly in operation too- but with pluto- they wouldnt really have needed it

Lena O, you gotta teach me that double ? thing... it gets addictive.

respect to the brunettes - they let shaft play before them at their album release show - sorta like turning the killswitch on oneself before one even gets to stage --- most definitely not wankers

Fuck, I totally fogot.....we're in NZ............anyone who can't sing or play guitar becomes a favourite of the artsy types.....sorry, my mistake.

you are just embarrassing yourself.
