Have been away for 2 years and you just don't hear stuff like this anywhere... so many pretenders but none come close to the top aotearoa songs.... not really close at all, i guess i'm just getting nostalgic...peace.
The Venus Trail is fucking awsome. I first heard it when I was 12/13, when I was getting into Sonic Youth, and it just blew me away. It still does. Its so hard to find someone to talk to about how cool the 3Ds are, or even get someone to listen to them. They just rule - but I bet more than half, if not all the people that we pass on the street dont know about them. They deserve more credit, and they should still be talked about because they are such an essential part of New Zealand Music. It just sucks if the record companies arent marketing a band, then you never hear about them. Stink....
there are not many more things better than a 3Ds gig.
we used to have a practise room down the hall from the 3Ds when they were jamming for Strange News From the Angels. we didn't used to practise much - we just hugged the walls and absorbed the sound.
Has anybody heard anything about the 3Ds playing a gig in Dunedin soon? Some random guy in a record store mentioned it when i was looking for a 3Ds album. Soooo...have i been misinformed??? I really really hope its true and i hate being misinformed. And if that person just randomly said that to get my hopes up I'll kick his arse!!!!
venus trail. covers all the bases, and its a wonderful album. after that, hellzapoppin', strange news from the angels, then the 2-ep split. also the ghostclub album (3ds dave mitchell and denise roughan) is excellent, as is the 'complete goblin mix and exploding budgies' comp - mitchell's first two bands combined output. theres a bunch of really great 7 inches from the venus trail / strange news era too, often under solo project names, such as the aforementioned ghostclub, and dave saunders 'spacious'
The best 3ds stuff was the two early eps, but just to prove it didn't end there, along came ghostclub!
Ghostclub are an awesome live band, and they are playing in Brighton (UK) on the 29th of August 04.
If you get the chance to see them, don’t miss it, they pretty much are living testimony that what was happening in NZ in the 80s/90s is still going as strong as ever. (They just don't live there at the moment)
'The Fiery Angel' would have to be a contender for best 3ds songs; it must have been extracted from the part of the communal mind where all good pieces of good music come from; the sort that people all respond in the same way to, chills down your spine, aching, yearning way. Not possibly the lost epic 3ds song, but you can hear screams of a southerly gale as it mutilates itself on the gothic exterior of real Dunedin.
