The only redeeming factor of this video is the Holden. Great song though.

God save the Clean indeed!

Saw a wicked performance in Wellington last week with a great combination of swirling new material plus some old faves from the 20 year (!) back catalogue.
Still vital and new - looking forward to the next album.

Can anyone tell me when The Clean are coming to The United States? How can I get the new album? Will it be on flying Nun?

Hey Paul7 - check out The Clean's US tour details at the link below. Hope you can get to one of these shows - they're even more fantastic live. And Merge Records are selling their latest album - getaway - on their site as well. I think the album is also now available in US stores - before we can buy it here!

HEY GUYS YOUS SHOULD COME PLAY IN DUNEDIN AT arc

Live in Boston (Middle East Club) 9/19/2001

The Clean played here last night despite being in the middle of the world trade centre crisis, having a car accident, and not managing to soundcheck. They played support to 'Apples in Stereo' which I found to be pretty uninteresting. The guys played a woefully short set due to them playing in a supporting role and the strict rules of playing times of the club (that wouldnt happen at Bodega!!). It also didnt sound so good to start with due to the inability to get a soundcheck in first...just towards the end of the set they really got into their stride. The audience seemed to be mainly college (university) students that had just arrived in town for the beginning of the semester. They seemed relatively ambivalent to one of the most musically significant New Zealand groups. More fool them! Anyway, despite all these setbacks it was nice to hear such familiar tunes as 'Fish', 'Dont Point that Thing at Me' and 'Tally Ho!'. Went home feeling a little sad, but still glad for coming and hearing a few gems. I'm sure that the experience elsewhere on the tour will be different, especially where the Clean is headlining.

Cheers!

It's really too bad The Clean couldn't play longer at The Middle East. Their last song Tally Ho sequed into a bit of Roadrunner. I loved the drummer's comment "Didn't Jonathan learn all his tricks from Lou Reed anyway?". I was excited too see them, bit dissapointed they didn't play longer or headline. Anyway, the new album is great!

Look out for the new limited edition Clean EP "Slush Fund" out now on Arclife. Features live tracks from their legendary performance at last years Dunedin Sound festival. Available from yre friendly local record store or for NZ$15 from Arc Cafe 135 High Street Dunedin.

. . . still reeling from the show@Arc last night. Chime-iest/jangliest "Point That Thing" I've ever heard, subdued, disinterested "Getting Older", juggernauted "Fish". Ace!

yeah, i've seen them play better, faster, harder, but it was still good, and had some very mean, lean sounds ... thought Bob was on top form last night ... their version of Flowers was triffic ... Fish was good too, like a good shag - fast slow fast slow, the slow there to remind you how great the fast bits are ... too much information? heh ... Hamish's drums looked too stable for him ... he usually plays like a god when they start wandering away from him ... and Dave had some nice harsh ascerbic vinegar guitar ... what a backdrop!

Yeah, the point of the show was that it wasn't being faster/harder etc - sort of lowkeyed comfortable Dunedin gig, town/crowd & band assuming each other like an old sweater. Or something. Yeah, v.nic vox by Mister Scott on Flowers (good encore choice, eh?). Notice Hamish snapping a drumstick midsong? He didn't, grin. And that's the best Arc backdrop I've seen - such a shame it'll probably disappear.

Very much looking forward to seeing them @ Bodega on 24/4. I hear Bodega is imposing curfews thanks to noise controls, so I guess that means the set will be a little earlier than I am used to there.

I do not know much of The Cleans stuff but awhat i have heard i like.... and i am wondering what would be a good album to start off on? any suggestions?

depends what you're after, but probably 'Vehicle' is a fast, neat, loud lil pop album, with a sense of the relentless-jam sound that i'm personally addicted to, without too much of it. it's great sunny day driving music ...

if you want a larger selection and variety, i HIGHLY recommend the Clean 'Compilation', as it has a lot of their early tunes on it, a lot of their hits, and some nasty/gorgeous lil live tracks, so treble-ly and mono you can almost smell the stale smoke of the Empire ... sigh ...

i'd better stop there, i'm gonna end up naming them all as required listening ... one thing for sure is that the Clean are definitely a LIVE band - their albums capture that, but it's nothing like seeing them play live ...

anthology

Love this band, have done for years, long may the rule these isles....

!!!
Is everyone else as excited as I am by the upcoming Clean 2CD anthology? This has the potential to be one of my favourite albums EVER (the compilation format really really suits the Clean - see, er, "Compilation" for proof), & I really hope it's packaging/photos/liner notes attempt to keep up with the music.

The Clean are an important band. They have this great sound. It's music to take you places. The Velvet Underground liberated people as did the 1977 punk wave and The Dunedin Sound so called, added a special take on things. The Clean are a big part of that take. There is a tribute EP from America on this band on 7" vinyl called 'Cleaned Out' (bands: Sleepyhead/Uncle Wiggly/Kick Stand/Airlines through Another Dark Beloved Cloud Incident) Check out The Psychedelic Clown on 7" - a beautiful wee number. A Fish and Point That Thing Somewhere Else cut it. Tally Ho! was a breakthrough. ( Find the early compilation album for that and you won't regret it. )Peter Gutteridge is a very special ingredient on it. The Great Unwashed is another life with these people that is a crucial find. Hamish Kilgour's beats are effectively understated with a very effective style. David Kilgour is a maestro. Bob Scott went onto The Bats. He has a nice way also. The Clean are a mainstay. What would life be like without them? Like The Chills they have a lot of open chords. It's the drone of Dunedin. Dunedin is a Scottish town with pipers all over the show. It must be subliminal. You know where they're from - you can feel it. Chris Knox and Roger Shepherd got it out there.

i just want to say: Diamond Shine is about the most beautiful song i have ever heard.
