Maybe it has been talked about already, but well, life is a constant evolution (or regression, depending on) ....so, there I go.
Yesterday, in our traditional wednesday night friends meeting, I was sharing with them three french wine bottles and a big variety of, quite literally awful, french cheeses and a yummy Canard Foie that I stolen in my vacations in an InterMarché Supermarket in Luchon (FR) ... we were celebreting my new job ... just an excuse.
My friend is a jazz fan but yesterday he surprised us with a cd... Blade Runner Soundtrack by Vangelis ... and ... god ... we all get deeply surprised and profoundly “abducted” (maybe being 5 and three wine bottles contribute to it ...) ...we shut up and I closed my eyes (no, no...I was not sleeping drunk ) and we were listening most of the cd tracks ... marvellous creation ... I could feel myself like in the movie, and much more with some excerpts of conversations ... that dialog/interrogatory between Rachel and Deckard. In spite of my miserious english ( I didnt get the whole conversation)... it was like another instrument melancholically adde. Realize Im not a Vangelis fan, well, sincerely, I didnt know a lot of his music ...just the name and something more.... call me ignorant. Anyway its an excellent soundtrack, great creation, really great.
It has been long time since I watched Blade Runner, I think I need to review it.
Rambling lit bit, lately Ive watched “Lost in Translation” (I liked very much) and “Munholland Dr.” by Lynch (good one, but I have to see that movie two more times ...) and tonight there is nothing to do, so I will review Amelié, ... soundtrack is also very beutiful and I wanna see that so peaceful and beutiful face again.... Ah, samflux, I saw "Zatoichi" DVD -Takeshi Kitano in the shop... it will be the next one.
Any more soundtrack?

The lost in translation soundtrack is great and the Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind soundtrack is worth checking out too. Quite songy though rather than score.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly has just been re-released with a whole bunch of new tracks and ... c'mon now, that theme song!
The Garden State soundtrack looks good but I haven't heard it yet. Again it's more a collection of songs then a score.

“Excalibur” .. with “O Fortuna” Carmina Burana by Karl Orff... with the riders in the almond trees field
and how many times we have listened the Voodoo Child by Jimi Hendrix?! ... “In the name of The Father” was one of them.... cool.

oh, and the only one that comes close to blade runner in goodness is badalamenti's Twin Peaks stuff.

i lurve Angelo Badalamenti. he does some gooooood stuff. i like his non-instrumental stuff especially - he sometimes has this reverbed-out weird rap going on in the background of smooooooth funk, so funny and catchy. i have a feeling that some of the best bits of DJ Shadow might be influenced by Badalamenti. which brings me to the "End of Violence" soundtrack, which i like very much.

The Matrix has to get an award for best ever use of a propellerheads track in a motion picture. The first time I ever saw it I nearly wet myself. And the second time. Also the third time. And the fourth...after that I stopped seeing it at the movies, and the effect isn't quite as good on tv.

i really like the rob d track 'clubbed to death' on the matrix soundtrack. generally it's a very good album, that soundtrack... but the best soundtrack EVER EVER is for Natural Born Killers. It's got such diverse tracks and it totally evokes every scene of the movie... in fact I prefer it to the movie now that i'm old and can't handle screen violence

Which is an excellent segue for me to add "trainspotting" to this little list. Which in turn brings us to "Singles" which logically leads to "Repo man" followed by "SLC punk" obviously. All of which in my humble and somewhat twisted opinion have soundtracks that rock!

The only trouble with the Blues Brothers soundtrack that was released is that it doesn't contain all of the songs from the movie, such a pity. I can't think of specific examples but I am certain of this.

my secret shame shall be secret no more. one of my favourite soundtracks is 'Sleepless in Seattle'. it's short, but really good:
1. As Time Goes By - Jimmy Durante (Great!)
2. Kiss to Build a Dream On - Louis Armstrong (Even Better!)
3. Stardust - Nat King Cole (THE BEST)
4. Makin' Whoopee - Dr. John (Not So Good. in fact horrible cutesy)
5. In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning - Carly Simon (OK, but goes on a bit)
6. Back in the Saddle Again - Gene Autry (Great, especially after high production number above)
7. Bye Bye Blackbird - Joe Cocker (A Good Version)
8. Wink and a Smile - Harry Connick Jr. (Even this is Good!
9. Stand by Your Man - Tammy Wynette (a classic, but often gets the skipbutton treatment)
10. Affair to Remember (OK)
11. Make Someone Happy - Jimmy Durante (the perfect end ... just don't play track 12)

I watched the original 'Pink Panther' a couple of weeks back and was blown away by Mancini's score. I was trying to just really listen to the opening theme as it stands, rather than as a thing that has been rammed into my head over and over throughout my life... and it's great. Such a cool melody (obviously), but also such cool arrangements and changes and everything.

One movie has the two best soundtracks ...
One movie has the two best soundtracks ever made. Ghost Dog, Way of the Samurai:
1. The American version, compiled by the RZA, has a bunch of excellent tracks on it.
2. The Japanese version, composed by the RZA, is some really excellent electronic/non-vocal background music.
It's a great movie, too.
I don't like many soundtrack albums, ...
I don't like many soundtrack albums, only own one I think, but here's some thoughts...
The CD for 'Punch Drunk Love' should be pretty good, judging by how amazing the Jon Brion score was. I see he's on the new Finn Bros album... his stuff on 'Eternal Sunshine..' was great too, but I think the album is marred by some really crap songs, most notably ELO. GRRRRR!!!
John McEntire's 'Reach The Rock' is pretty good.. without the rest of Tortoise things are substantially less prog, and the band tracks fit in well with his score. Makes me laugh that he soundtracked a John Hughes film. :) Haven't seen the movie.
Isaac Hayes' 'Shaft' is overblown, but contains what I reckon is far and away his best track - 'Do Your Thing'. A friend told me the CD reduces the 15+ min version to 4 or 5 which is a real pity. Probably doesn't even have the needle leaving the record noise at the end.
Curtis Mayfield's 'Superfly' has some amazing songs - 'Superfly' itself, 'Freddie's Dead', and 'Give Me Your Love' - but the soundtrack moments are pretty whatever.
The 'Dead Presidents' CD was a decent collection of soul and funk, with some excellent numbers like The Spinners' 'I'll Be Around', Curtis's 'If There's A Hell Below' and Sly's 'If You Want Me To Stay'. The one Danny Elfman number from the score is really out of place.
Bernard Hermann's scores are generally great, as are Morricone's, but I haven't listened to an album by either. Personal fave for the former is 'Taxi Driver'... that insistent repeating theme is sooooo good.
Oh yeah, thinking of Scorcese, 'Passion' by Peter Gabriel is really good instrumental stuff mixing up a lot of West African, Middle Eastern and Pakistani sounds with electronics. It's for 'The Last Temptation of Christ', which I've never seen.
What's the Morricone score with the harmonica that's designed to be annoying? 'Once Upon A Time In The West'? That's a classic, but I'd never own the album for obvious reasons...
The guy who whistled on 'The Good The Bad, And The Ugly' also wrote 'Ma-na ma-na' as made famous by The Muppets.
I should look into 'Blade Runner' - it's just so passe. ;) I definitely thought the music worked in the film.

The Theme from Shaft.
Fanfreakintastic album/soundtrack. Probably issac's finest hour, I like the track with help from J.J.Johnson, [Walk from Regio's], Bumpy's Blues, the title track, and Jet's pick "Do Your Thing", which incidentially is 19:38 on the CD. As far as the vinyl pressing is concerned I remember it taking all of Side3, but cant remember its length.
I give a nod to Miles Davis comp for L'Acension. Dark Film, Dark Music, and could possibly be viewed as a catalyst for other Africian-Americans to break in to the lucrative business of Film Score.
Miles and Marcus Miller on the Siesta from c.1987 was good too, shame about the film.
Thinking of song stuff, I admit I was ...
Thinking of song stuff, I admit I was into 'Trainspotting', 'Pulp Fiction' and 'Natural Born Killers'. None of them are good soundtracks, IMO.
And I do really like the music from 'Twin Peaks'. I always wondered what that album with Badalamenti and the lead singer of James was like. Dunno why I never listened to it when I saw it in Tower Lambton Quay over and over and over.. when that store existed.
// None of them are good soundtracks, ...
// None of them are good soundtracks, IMO
so what makes a good soundtrack? i rate the natural born killers one
I was just thinking of how they work in ...
I was just thinking of how they work in with the movie. I have a real bias against songs in the soundtrack of a movie, except maybe when it's actually being played back or performed in the scene in question - like in a bar or whatever.
To be honest, I didn't like 'Natural Born Killers' the movie at all, so I'm also really biased against that..!
One more, inspired by velocity's ...
One more, inspired by velocity's mention of Jim Jarmusch: I often wonder about scores by John Lurie. Ones I think of are 'Down by Law' and 'Stranger than Paradise' (Jim Jarmusch), 'Blue In The Face' (Wayne Wang) and 'Animal Factory' (Steve Buscemi). They're all pretty good in their own ways.
Jarmusch tends to chuck in some really good songs too, so if the soundtracks for those flicks are available as albums maybe they have some of those goodies too... Hmm.
As a bit of a Springsteen fanboy, I'm a sucker for his tracks on the 'Philadelphia' and 'Dead Man Walking' soundtracks too. 'Born in the USA' was originally for an anti-Vietnam flick. Hence the fact it's such an incredibly negative, sour song. Just so mis-understood! *sob*
