What's your favourite you've heard so far? And the worst?
I dig the sound of the new Sommerset. And Minuit's 88.
However the Datsuns is terrible. But i spose that doesn't *quite* work.
I'm not too up to date in the NZ scene, so i struggle to name a BEST and worst.
But that's a start.
Also, any producers and engineers worthy of recognition (in your eyes)? Who do they have under their name?
Yeah yeah yeah blah blah you're probably going to say you know him and he's your friend and you did some work with him - we're all fucking over it, Lena. Get a life.
the Clean, Boodle Boodle Boodle ep, and Great Sounds Great bimmin neat character... still sound more real, and inviting than most of the overproduced crap these days(needles to mention Pacifier/Shihad?Whatever??? and Weta, as examples)...hat's off to Chris Knox and Doug Hood and those Kilgours and that Scott fulla, and last but certainly not least, the Teac 4-track; God bless you Granny Knox!
Ohhh, and needless to mention Chills Lost EP, and of course 'Pink Frost', as being exquisitely produced; 'Doledrums' was a bit of a clanger though...
Should I dear to mention the atrocity to human-kind that was the production on the Toy Love album?
Of course Chris Knox and Alec Bathgate made up for it on all related subsequent releases...
Best? - pre-digital would be the fabby Jean paul Sartre Experience debut EP (OK not quite an album but neither were the Clean EPs above) way back in 1986 I think - especially the first side of the vinyl ("Fish in the Sea", "Fiiretime", "Own two Feet"). Best post-analogue would have to be the Phoenix Foundations "Horsepower" - sumptious in a spacey breathable way and not overwhelmed by the technology.
Worst - pre-digital is without a doubt The Puddle's "Into the Moon" . Worst post-analogue? Well, you take your pick, there's a heap of sterile Pro-tooled things to choose from.
yeah the puddle album is pretty shakey - they apologies for the quality of the first track on the sleeve.. the mid 90s flying nun stuff was always punchy and clean (maybe thanks to tex?), notable: 3ds 'venus trail' and superette's 'tiger'
I remember the Jean Paul Sartre Experience had a fifth "member" (like that "fifth Beatle" bloke) early on - Rob Pinder. He produced the early stuff and also did their sound on the road with them (hence very good sound at gigs). Nighthift studios and Arnie van busel (?) also figure in a lot of those early Nun prods.
The Puddle release with the sound glitch was "Pop Lib" (a few years prior to "Into the Moon"). A bit of hum buzz gloop on "Spaceship No. 9". Happily "Spaceship No. 9" saw the light of day again as a perfectly realised (and recorded) track on one of the Mink albums. Forgotten masterpieces those two Mink albums...
Arnie van Bussel, bona-fide living legend.
Criminally underated, this man has helped countless Chch musicians make a start with the recording process, and from their grow as musicians. In fact i'd go so far as too say, that no single person has had a greater influence on Chch musicians than Mr VB.
The Clean, JPSE,Cripple Mr Onion, The Feelers, Human, The Bats,Dance Exponents, Equus, Rua, Hardfill, Malcom McNeil, Dave Anderson, Surfin USSR, Jon Hooker, Netherworld Dancing Toys.....

Supergroove's "Traction" still rocks for me. I love the production on that album.
Weta's "Geographica" kicks ass too. Such a shame they didn't realise anything else...
