In one of his latest Blog entries, Simon Sweetman has put forward the idea of producing a compilation of true New Zealand hits, the songs that people who actually listen to music would love.
Simon has compiled a personal list he thinks is worthy of the "Nature's Be(a)st", we agree for the most part and the comments on the blog post have already come up with some omissions and better songs by the same artists that could be included.
The List
- - The Muttonbirds: Nature
- - Bailterspace: Argonaut
- - HLAH: I’m on Fire
- - The 3D’s: Animal
- - Superette: Saskatchewan
- - Garageland: Struck
- - Bressa Creeting Cake: Papa People
- - The Fanatics: Models
- - Shihad: My Mind’s Sedate
- - Wendyhouse: Drugs
- - Die! Die! Die!: Ashtray! Ashtray!
- - Letterbox Lambs: 20 Cigarettes
- - The Clean: Point That Thing Somewhere Else
- - Tall Dwarfs: Gluey, Gluey
- - Cassette: Silly Billy
- - Paselode: Dirty Little Piggy
- - Split Enz: Bold As Brass
- - Straitjacket Fits: Let It Blow
- - Upper Hutt Posse: E Tu
- - Gasoline Cowboy: I See Stars
- - Two Lane Blacktop: The Rat
- - Weta: Got The Ju
- - The Mint Chicks: F**K the Golden Youth
- - Alec Bathgate: Broken Cup
- - Jakob: The Diffusion of Our Inherent Situation
- - Marystaple: Go To Sleep
- - Darcy Clay: All I Gotta Do
- - Brubeck: The Myoclonic Twitch
- - Paul Ubana Jones: Raga (“The Bird Without Song”)
- - Tim Finn: Death of a Popular Song
I like the idea of Tim Finn’s song title as a theme for the end of the compilation more so than the actual song. But I guess in just a basic list without an explanation/justification that is something of an in-joke only. - Simon Sweetman (from Comments)
This gets our vote for NZ compilation of the year!

I definitely agree that
I definitely agree that Argonaut by Bailter Space should be replaced with X.
