Hollie Smith has just signed a multi-album deal with Manhattan Records a subsidiary of legendary Jazz/Blues label Blue Note Records!
This has proven to be a greath month for Hollie who has just released her new album Long Player distributed through EMI who also aided Hollie in signing the deal with Manhattan Records

Blue Note general manager Ian Ralfini said it was Smith's story-telling and lyrics which drew him to her music.

Congrats Hollie!

Nice work.

I've heard muttering that, with EMI having just been sold on the 22nd, Blue Note and its subsidiaries could well be seen as dead weight to be ditched. That would be after the major flop (in investment vs. return terms) of Norah's last album.

So that's pretty stink timing. Not that I can talk.

I guess there's always nay sayers tho... who knows what'll happen?

I doubt that Blue Note will be dropped.
There's still a bit of life in the old girl yet.
They're just reinventing themselves.
but I guess they do only have the strength of their back catalogue keeping them afloat

Hmm thats interesting Jet as Norah Jones recorded he last record at home which must mean a serious dip in cost compared to her earlier fancy studio albums. I may be ill informed.

I really hope the Bluenote thing goes well for Holly its a big risk signing a multi-album deal but her manager is pretty on to it and fairly responsible for signing Breaks Co-op to Parlophone I believe so he should be able to weigh up the evils of the different companies.

Its funny this offloading of the majors little sub labels. They often have much better return (in ratio to investment) than the flagship labels/artists and much less risk. I actually think we may see a new era where labels break off from their major chains and go back to the investor indy label scenario that kicked arse in the late fifties. Atlantic being the prime example.

anyway blah de blah... GOOD LUCK HOLLY!

¿blue note have got norah & now hollie?- ¿what are they reinventing themselves as i wonder?- maybe if they dropped everyone else & signed similar- er- talent they could use the slogan

blue note records- marginally better than drinking tepid diarrhoea
