About Easy

The best things in life occur naturally, without effort or difficulty. Such is the nature of this 6-piece genre-spanning group from Auckland City. Their captivating and energetic sound is the result of their diverse influences and backgrounds coming together to create an original yet familiar feel, both on stage and in the studio. Their music incorporates dub, rock, ska, funk, hip-hop and soul. “Easy” came together in such a fluid way that a precise start-point is impossible to discern. However, it was the “Poetry in Motion” jam nights at Auckland’s Rising Sun bar during 2004-5 where guitarist Dan Pilkington, vocalist Maia Rata, guitarist Perry Hooper and Bass player Jared Greenwood were first performing together, accompanied by various drummers, MC’s, DJ’s and other musicians. Dan, Perry and Jared slowly became frustrated with the lack of structure and began writing riffs to base the jams around. These would be the blueprints of Easy’s first songs. Following the cessation of the “Poetry in Motion” nights, the boys decided to find a permanent drummer and pursue songwriting and practicing as an actual band. Once drummer Richard Beckmannflay was successfully auditioned, it was on. Since making it official, the band entered the AUT Battle-of-the-Bands, cruising in at first place to take the title, which opened a few bookings for AUT Orientation.

Currently, the group is writing new songs and recording, but the focus is on perfecting the live show. When it comes to putting in the work, this band is certainly not taking it easy.
