The driving force behind Dimmer is Shayne Carter, a prominent New Zealand musician and member of such bands as Straitjacket Fits and Double Happys.
The band have released three full length albums, I Believe You Are A Star and You've Got To Hear The Music. Dimmer released their third album, There My Dear, on 24 July 2006. The new album is a return to a more rock-based sound reminiscent of Straitjacket Fits last album Blow. Shayne Carter has been the only permanent member of the band since its inception, and regularly uses other prominent musicians in the studio. You've Got To Hear The Music and There My Dear included backing vocals from Anika Moa and Bic Runga.
Letter from Shayne
It's been a long road to hoe, full of blind alleys and discovery, but we got there and the thing says what we want it to say. no point putting it out if it doesn't and no point putting out a record that you feel only contributes to the morass of mediocrity already there. Gary (Sullivan) talented drummer/graphics guy has made an amazing animated video for seed which should be out right about now. It's beautiful and appropriately 'road' in an unswavering way ,just like the tune.
We've also shot another video for 'I Believe You Are a Star' in which I indulged my weird childhood trotting obsession (don't ask ) and got to drive in a race at Alexandra Park. needless to say it totally ripped - the flying grit ! the thunder ! my too small helmet! fuck rock man - just lemme loop the field three wide. It's been nice taking responsibility for our own clips after years of some guy behind the camera going "more energy! more energy!". It really is another way to say what you've got to say (i.e life is weird, i'm weird, that guy over there is Really weird). hopefully we'll get stuff from these clips up and on dimmer.co.nz site within the next month or so.
We toured the country with HDU and Sola Rosa a month or so ago. Spraggon did exceptionally well fulfilling bass duties with us and doing his own Sola Rosa thing and it was a pleasure to witness HDU, their surrealist
metal, and their chords that take forever . They're a real good band - probably my favourite in New Zealand. It was also excellent having Dimmer up and running again and a relief just to get up and play some fucking music. especially after an eternity of studiobound analdom. People seemed to enjoy it and, people, we enjoyed you. The publicity avalanche has begun in new zealand at least - take with a grain of salt. It's hard not having the same article over and over again cos they all ask the same question(s)and usually there's just the one response. I did enjoy my chat with gary steel for 'metro' though so hopefully he'll come up with something different. Check out his store 'beautiful music' in k' road (that'll be the new monolake album thanks man) .
