History

Bic Runga grew up in Christchurch, learning the drums at 11 and beginning to write songs while at highschool. She comes from a musical family, her mum being a singer, as well as her sisters - Boh in Stellar* and Pearl with various other artists, including fronting 90s drum'n'bass outfit Locust with Damon Schwalger (The Nomad) and singing with Strawpeople.

Bic moved to Auckland in the 90s to attempt to pursue a music career.

Drive was Bic's first album and hit number one in NZ upon its release in 1997. It went on to sell seven times platinum and was the biggest selling album by a New Zealand artist of all time. It won six Tuis at the NZ Music Awards in 1998, including Album of the Year.

Bic released her second album, Beautiful Collision, in 2002. It sold eleven times platinum in NZ and reached the top 10 in Japan and Ireland and top 40 in the UK.

In 2005, Bic Runga released her 3rd studio album, Birds. Joining Bic for the recording of the album were Neil Finn, Anika Moa, Anna Coddington (from Duchess), Shayne Carter, Riki Gooch (TrinityRoots), Conrad Standish (The Devastations), Benny Maitland and Tim Arnold (Pluto). Birds was released to critical acclaim.

As well as her solo work in 2000 she recorded a cover of The Cars' Drive with the Strawpeople and toured NZ with Tim Finn and Dave Dobbyn. A live CD was released off the back of the tour.
