Malty Media

Malty Media is a loose chill out project based in Wellington.

History

Electronic music makers Stuart McDonald (Aquaboogie) and Michael Upton (Jet Jaguar) first wrote stuff together in the early 90s as two-thirds of ambient trio MonkeyShuttle. 11 years after that band fell apart in acrimony and sugar highs gone wrong, Stuart came to visit Michael in Tokyo and they took the opportunity to play a gig. Seeking to confound any potential audience as much as possible, they assembled a set of material largely based around childhood memories of New Zealand TV & radio with heavy nods to the 90s ambient house dons such as The Orb and The KLF that had inspired them a decade earlier. The Tokyo audience were greeted with video footage of cattle being mustered, sheep being shorn, and other nonsense while fragments of Poi E and the Goodnight Kiwi music clashed with juxtaposed ponderings on the fortunes of captains Buck Rogers and Shelford (frozen in time for centuries, a French sprig in the testicles).

Four polished-up turds from the Tokyo set were offered to UK-based net label Monotonik, who released them as the Bracken Bed EP in May, 2007.

Now both living in Wellington again, Malty Media continues as a fairly free-form project, sometimes composing (so-called) original material together, sometimes DJing other people's stuff, somewhat in the spirit of old school chill out rooms at raves.
