Gasoline Cowboy

Gasoline Cowboy are a band based in Auckland, New Zealand featuring previous members of Christchurch band Fuce.

History

Gasoline Cowboy was originally the vehicle for some "crazy electronic music" of vocalist/guitarist Jol Mulholland's while playing guitar with his band Fuce, based in Christchurch. In 2003 the band decided to relocate to Auckland. When Fuce bit the dust, Jol invited Fuce vocalist Scott Mason and bass player Greg Hillier to join him as drummer and bass player respectively under the moniker Gasoline Cowboy and turned the band into an alt-pop group.

In 2003 they procured some recording time in Aucklands Arch Hill Studios. Arch Hill Records' Ben Howe heard the two tracks they recorded, I Hear You Call My Name and Philosophies, and asked if he could put them on the studio's compilation The Hill Is Alive which was released in September that year.

The next three years 3 years saw them secure tour supports around New Zealand with the likes of Breaks Co-op, Goldenhorse, Pluto, Goodshirt and The Finn Brothers. Selected by Neil Finn himself for the Finn Brothers tour support, the Cowboys found themselves at the start of 2005 in Roundhead Studios (Neil Finn's commercial recording studio), working with Neil Baldock – whose credits include Dave Dobbyn, The Finn Bros, Che Fu (the list goes on) recording their debut album.

In October 2005, they independently released their self titled EP – which featured five tracks, including two previously released singles - I Hear You Call My Name and Heading For The Ground. I Hear You Call My Name received extensive airplay on the B.net (reaching number 1 on Radio Active), and Channel Z.

In August 2006 You Shot a Cowboy, the first single from their debut album, was released to radio and television – and reached #22 on the NZ Radioscope Charts. The quirky animations and well edited video clip for the song was a favourite with NZ music TV stations C4 and Juice YV. The follow on from this saw them harness the talented skills of Bret Nichols (The Locals), to direct and produce their next video – ‘Beach in Cali High’.

Gasoline Cowboy travelled to Austin, Texas in March 2007 to perform at the SXSW Festival.

Their debut album is due for release at some point in 2007.
