David Long

David Long is a Wellington-based producer, composer, guitarist and banjo player. His most famous band involvement is as a member of The Muttonbirds, but his compositional approach extends much wider than the song format.

History

David was a member of Wellington-based band The Six Volts. As well as releasing two albums, the Volts played as backing band on The Front Lawn's first album, David's first involvement recording with Don McGlashan.

David joined Don McGlashan's next project, The Muttonbirds. He played guitar and occasional banjo on the first three albums, leaving after The Envy Of Angels. He also toured extensively as a member of the band, and described in an interview how he enjoyed setting himself assignments on stage to keep things enjoyable when playing the same songs for years on end. An example he cited was that before he played the solo in Nature he would decide that he would play on only one string or restrict himself to only moving down the fret board.

In 2001 Braille Records released a solo album of David Long songs under the moniker Slim Volume. The album was called Come On In and included musicians from bands he had produced for and played in, such as Janet Roddick of The Six Volts and Julia Dean and Andrew Bain of Fur Patrol.

In 2005 Braille Records put out The Labcoats' album Acid and Alkaline. As well as being a performing member of the band, David's trademark production techniques are evident all over the CD.

David has composed a lot of material for soundtracks, The Lord of the Rings series and King Kong being the largest budget movies he has provided music for.

Production credits include Fur Patrol, Dave Dobbyn, and Samuel Flynn Scott. He has appeared as a guest performer on several albums where he wasn't (co-)producer, such as TrinityRoots' debut, True.
