Datsun Stereo

Datsun Stereo is a dance music duo from Wellington.

History

Datsun Stereo is a duo comprised of Tarn McDonald and Michael Upton (Jet Jaguar). They had been writing together for a decade before they ended up in the same flat in 2001 and bashed out a set of tunes.

After various compilation appearances, Datsun Stereo's music was finally released by Wellington label Capital Recordings in January 2003. The self-titled 12" EP contained 4 Datsun Stereo tracks.

Tarn and Michael haven't lived in the same country since writing material in 2001 and have found no success so far in getting a long-distance collaboration happening.

Trivia

  • The title of the track '4 My Pepys' is pronounced "for my peeps", "peeps" being the correct pronunciation of diarist Samuel Pepys' family name. Informal studies have found that no radio DJ has ever pronounced the track title correctly on-air.
  • Two out of four released Datsun Stereo tracks had to be renamed after errors were made with tracklists on compilations. Loop label staff put the wrong track name on the sleeve of Loop Select 3, and Michael from Datsun Stereo wrote down the wrong track order when supplying a selection of tracks for Capital Recordings' Earwork compilations.
