Review from the Austin Chronicle. Thought you guys might be interested.
For the Kiwis, on the other hand, no news is no news. Really, when was the last time any world-grabbing headline came out of Aotearoa? You win another sailing race someplace? Another D&D elf epic in production?
Well, maybe the boredom has some spillover benefits. Really, New Zealand couldn't even manage to drum up a band that really fits the country's namesake genre of New Zealand pop. Save for maybe one. Remember Straitjacket Fits? No? Okay. Well, Dimmer came out of their demise (before their recent reunion). At its core, the fourpiece still flashes vestiges of the strum that gave the genus its name, but now it's got a little more noise dripped over the top.
But you want to get weird. The kiwis are upping the ante on weird. First up is So So Modern. If you're wearing matching hoodies onstage, you better be able to bring it. Sorry to steal the term, but the band's spastic electroclash really is pissyourpantstastic. Similarly, there's the wicked Devo-meets-the-Buzzcocks experimental garage mix of the Mint Chicks. (Note: not chicks.)
Auckland's Gasoline Cowboy has a top-shelf name, and their self-descriptive prog-folk is even better. Well played, gentlemen (golf clap). And if you like your punk a little less fringe but still not completely rote, there's Die! Die! Die! The Dunedin trio isn't just another minor threat and has been touring relentlessly behind their Albini-produced debut. For punk, this stuff is seriously serious.
Bic Runga
For more straight-ahead fare, Elemeno P's straight-up guitar rock has made them one of NZ's biggest-selling acts while nu-metal act Blindspott were the first New Zealand band to have both of their first two albums debut in the charts at numero uno. And holy riffage, Batman! Cut Off Your Hands is a Gang of Four throwback to that brief period after punk before things all went wrong with skinny ties.
Finally, the Kiwis are sending a couple of dynamite voices. First and don't take this the wrong way did Carly Binding win some sort of contest? Because she totally sounds like Kelly Clarkson. Too bad there's no teenage vote at SXSW. Then there's Bic Runga doing Hope Sandoval doing Burt Bacharach's minor-keyed catalog in half time. Someone should book odds that Runga is the only SXSW 07 performer whose mother was a Chinese/Malaysian lounge singer. Easy money. And having a little action on SXSW couldn't help but make things just a little more interesting. end story
I'm travelling to NZ in May this year, and every foreign country I visit I like to view a local metal show, see how each country differs in style etc.
Can anyone point me to a website community or such regarding NZ metal?
Or if there isn't one, name some decent NZ bands I can checkout when I'm over there? I'll be seeing DragonForce when they tour in May should be tops!!
I've been searching n found a few NZ metal bands, but so far the only one thats caught my fancy is 8 Foot Sativa (sound well quality)
Cheers!
Dan.
If you could answer any or all of these questions, it would be awesome. I am writing an article on Punk culture and Music today. Feel free to add anything else you feel is important.
Do you believe there is a punk culture still alive in New Zealand, do you believe there ever was one? How is the punk culture still alive in New Zealand?
Does modern punk music, or any music genre, have the same messages and impact on people that punk music had in the 1970s and 1980s?
What do you think of punk music coming out at the moment, has it taken a turn for the worse or is new punk and its sub-cultures better than the originals?
Where do you think punk influences can be seen today? Internationally or in New Zealand?
Do you think todays youth have become complacent compared to the 1970s punk youth? Is todays youth too passive? Has the activism of punk disappeared?
Do you believe people still view punks and the punk culture the same way they viewed it 30 years ago?
Are punk bands today staying true to the beliefs of early punk bands e.g. anti-authority, anarchist, acceptance of everyone?
Is the punk attitude still alive?
This is really post for ex-pats in Melbourne. Future Stupid is doing a one off Cannon Fodder line up show with melbourne band Spider Goat Canyon at Pony bar on September 2nd. It's come about as the three peice found themselves all in a room together at once for the first time in about 6 years and realized it was gonna have to happen. We'll be playing most of the tracks off Cannon Fodder and a few of the newer tracks that never made it to disk. If your in Melbourne rock along, it's gonna be smoking!!!
Mango Pip Records is a successful yet relatively new label based in the UK. We are looking to sign only one artist this year, and hope to find some great sounding music with which we can focus our time and energy on. In our quest for fresh sounding music naturally we turned to NZ first. Ideally we are looking for music in the same kind of vein as Xavier Rudd, or ALO, or even Jason Mraz. However, if your music falls outside of these genres, but will still blow our socks off, then get in touch.
If you are interested in working alongside a highly respected, experienced and young label, then please send us an email or drop us a copy of your music to the address below. I will get back to you with any questions you might have.
Many thanks for your time

So it's a new year and therefore it's time for some new music. Recently I had the pleasure of driving through my favourite tunnel under the Wellington airport just as the climax of a Mogwai song kicked in on one of the NZM mix CDs that I received (or rather, one of the ones that Lisa Fur received, as my copy of it was blank, White Rhino, you're a bad burner), and holy fuck, it was just the most awesome auralgasm ever. So yes, back to the point, let's swap mix tapes again!
But to make things much much much easier on myself, this is the way we're going to do it.
1. Everyone who participates will email me their address, and I will pass that address on to another person chosen at random.
2. Each person only makes one copy of their mix CD and sends it directly to another person in the swap.
3. CDs must be of the very finest quality, compiled to a theme of your choosing, and preferably featuring art work and maybe even notes.
4. If you're going to participate in this, and I'd love you to, you need to pledge that you will have your CD in the mail by the end of next week. No slacking off, no excuses, no need for me to hassle you.
Okay? Awesome. Any questions? If you want to take part, and you really should, send me your address to hubris.co.nz by the end of Friday. Radsville.

Hi everyone, Im a teacher at and Auckland high school and this year we are doing stage challenge with a very NZ theme. So we are trying to use all NZ music to stay completely true to our story.
Anyway, without giving away to many trade secrets, can anyone suggest music tracks for a fire dance (something a bit trance/rock/hip hop or a series of tracks), a mourning/newlife dance (probabaly something slowish - but with a bit of umph).
Also, does anyone know a recording of a Hornpipe done by a NZ orchestra/philharmonia???
Any ideas are appreciated!!
Thanks
