Where's all the traffic?

What the hell's happened to all the activity this site used to have?

It seems like there's not many people using it anymore.

Forums: NZ Music,

moved to australia

I get the impression the upgrade has fucked it. I've written what I think needs to be improved in the help forum.

i like the old look.

For me it's not about the look, I reckon this is much cooler looking than it has been (although sucky IE6 on this machine does break it quite horribly) it's about being able to find any content at all with any kind of ease.

Also, throwing out all the content about NZ artists in favour of a wiki would've been awesome if there was an enthusiastic user base dedicated to updating stuff, but... well... When I was bored and unemployed I made a monster list of bookmarks for all the artists on the Nature CD series and in Grant Smithies' Soundtrack book and a couple of other ones that came to mind, with the intention of adding in some artists people actually know, but there's not much point when no one can find the information once it's been added.

It seems a fairly screaming indictment that there is no mention of Beautiful Machine. Once upon a time this site would have been abuzz with a new shihad album...

Shihad just updated their artist page, and there's a tiny by-line mention of the new album at the bottom

Actually I did that, as I felt it should be done.

I think having the wiki at the top is not such a good idea, perhaps forums should be at the top and labelled as Forums instead of Latest Site Happenings. The functionality is good, just needs some tweaks in the usability and design areas; it's a little bland/cold looking.

Hmm, I think Limegreen brings up an interesting point when he says:

I thought this thread was just about how quiet it's been in the forums section of this site. But is it something bigger? Is NZ music in the doldrums?

In the end it all comes down to content creation. Maybe people have grown weary of creating it?

I was thinking it might be nice to have something like a newsfeed ... oh wait there is a news section (i just checked), but there's nothing on it...

I don't know what the intention for that section of the site was? Is it so that anyone can create a news piece?

In any case I think the site should allow users to get email updates for when new bits of news get added (and obviously an easy unsubcribe) - sometimes people like that little pord to say "hey NZMusic.com" - not eveyone's into that, but then they don't have to sign up for it.

In fact I would like to see even more custom filters for email notifications, like "send me a notification for any new rock stuff" - That way the content that gets created has a higher chance of getting seen more. It might also be nice to have a view counter for each news piece / wiki page so that content creators can see how many hits their peice is getting.

The artists wiki also seems really unstructured at the moment. I saw a post from Heather saying a search function is coming soon, which will be good. There are a couple of other things that seem wrong there, like I clicked on one of the "pages by genre" links and got a whole heap of duplicate results. Like, in the rock one 'Easy' come up 4 times on the first page.

I'd like to see some action. Who are the site administrators? How is development done? Is it purely a volunteer thing? Is any help needed to get something rolling?

Anyway - there's so much potential here. Just needs a few things were tidied up. It's a definite improvement over the old one in any case, mostly because of the extendibility.

Ok, it's late, and reading over the above is like a brief dance in tangent land, you probably get the jist anyway.

Ahhhhh Yeah It's Music Site,

Kids don't listen to music anymore, their mates don't listen to music anymore and like anything that got to do with music in like last few years there been such significant fucking drop off, I just don't think we majorly appreciate it anymore. That that why numbers to this site has fallen sharply people is a site mostly dedicated to student / indie / nzmusic is gonna have its numbers diminish as more students and more students listen to dance / crunk / house music, drop party pills, go clubbing and have drunken scores with all there friends !!! That's the new Rock and Roll !!! Real Rock'n'Roll, The Rock'n'Roll I Love, Like Two Guitars, Bass and Drums, Rock'n'Roll is too old school and so not cool anymore that why we're not getting the numbers anymore man. NZmusic isn't cool anymore ...

>> Kids don't listen to music anymore ... NZmusic isn't cool anymore ...

Everything goes in cycles man. It will be cool again, oh yes, it will be cool again.

In the meantime there's nothing stopping us from creating an easy to use awesome resource for nz music. If only for our own sake.

Hey Mindvandal, really stoked that you're keen to participate. We've actually negotiated a major revamp, including pretty much everything you (and Jet in other posts) have suggested. Some point soon we'll need some friends-of-nzmusic.com who are interested in being editors & feature contributors, so I'll be in touch. (Jet, foal30, harsh bloke & christianity, you guys are on my mailing list too)

I see, i just figured out the news thing. If you click on the menu bar at the top it takes you to a blank page (no content apart from menu strip etc).

On the right side in the tree view titled Main Section you can click on the newest news. That should be the default if you click on the news button in the menu strip. That would be an easy fix and would make the news section much more user friendly.

i just get lost on the new style site. with the old version i knew instantly where new stuff was ... there's so much new stuff here i just get overwhelmed ...

i just wish the architecture was a bit more simple or obvious.

i still listen to music ALL THE TIME according to my last.fm page & my need for new turntable needles :D

it's the lack of black and gray. white just burns our monitors out. looking forward to hearing those mixes ILTC
