I'm looking at renting some rehearsal / studio space in Auckland for writing and recording music. Does anyone have any ideas or advice on how to get some space? I'm at a bit of a loss as to where I'm supposed to be looking.
Yeah hey do what my band's Wolfblitzen/Bambi did, rock on back to your old school and say " Hey dude I'm old student, I would really like to rent your school hall on and off the next few months during weekends ... " You work at you can almost score yourself hours of free practice space for ten, twenty bucks, which is way way cheaper than what it costs to use some of these practice spaces out around downtown. I know the one out behind Real Groovy sets you back about forty bucks an hour and the one out in Grey Lynn/Chinaman's Hill in between the two car parks is supposely fifty bucks an hour so yeah screw that shit you are just paying there rent and yeah just cause rents are ridiculously stupid doesn't mean you have to be man ...
Get yr facts right before you screw people over. The one on Chinamans hill was the Killingroom and it closed months before your slag off and it was just a bit over $40 for 3 hours. Now they have set up in Kingsland with amazing premises and 4 rooms constructed by a professional construction firm AND its only about $50 for 3 hours. These guys are doing a real service to the scene and if you just care to check out the place you will comprehendo what sort of rent they must be paying and then you go figure how they do such a great thing for so little. No noise control hassles, no headmaster coughing up coz you spilled some piss on his floor. You take yourself seriously you need serious space to rehearse. If yr just a wannabe you can always practice in a school hall or a cow paddock coz thats as far as yoll get. But mainly don't try to shit on people who are taking huge risks and working guts out to set up a facility that gives decent groups a decent chance to work out properly. Just give the thing some credit. Try them on 8468373
We really need a proper space where we can keep our gear setup as well as room for recording gear. Driving and having to setup everytime we wanna practice / record isn't really an option. Thanks for the advice though that's a great idea for getting a feel for an echo-y school hall.

I've got a rehearsal room set up at the back of the house in central aucks, not sure what to charge if i hired it out. "cosy" and "intimate" spring to mind! :o) room for a full band but not much more.
Would $150 for 6 hours use at the weekend sound unreasonable?
We hire our studio out for practice at $20.00 p/hr and are based in Manukau City, however as you say, you won't be able to keep your gear here set up n ready for your next rehersal. On a seperate note though, I agree with one of the other comments there about the storage units - we have a unit at Guardian Self Storgage in Wiri (in between Manukau and Manurewa) which is used for personal storage, however, notice bands sometimes practicing there in the weekends, so I'm pretty sure that they would allow it. They have a couple of locations in Auck - we rent our space at $160 p/mnth. Where we are based in Manukau there are a few other business units that rent their space during the evenings for bands - so perhaps you can ask a few local shops in your location whether that'd be an option as I know here in Manakau, small businesses and family businesses are always willing to help out.
Go for the new Killingroom in Kingsland. 4 cool purpose built rooms, parking, a lounge of sorts. Definitley the most professional space we have seen. Run by George who has been around a while and knows how it all works. Ring him on 021 408429.

The one behind Real Groovy is called The Manor. It DOES NOT set you back forty bucks an hour. Nowhere near it. ;)
It is well set up, conveniently located, great sounding rooms. We have recording services, video services, gear storage, gear hire, the best coffee in the southern hemisphere and someone on hand to look after you at all times.... pretty much everything and its a great place to hang out and meet fellow musicians.
Give me a call on 358 0835 for some true facts and to organise a visit. You're welcome to come have a coffee and check the place out.
That offer applies to anyone reading this BTW.
If The Manor doesn't suit your needs we'll happily offer whatever help and advice we can to get you sorted.

Nothing better then George's Killingroom in Kingsland ph 8468373. All new, all profesionnal
where are you based? tried getting a storage space and converting it into a practice space with a couple of other bands? that's what we currently do
I've converted a spare room at work into a space, it's not ideal but it'll do for the time being.
I rang one storage space and they don't allow bands. I'm based in Eden Terrace / Kingsland area. Which storage company allows bands to practice?
