well maybe.
it don't look to flash anyway
two out of 6 shops in Christchurch are hoping to "trade out"
again illegal downloads cited in business collapse.how many livelihoods are being ruined by this nefarious practice?
I'd let some fireworks off if I was allowed.
was this outfit in cahoots with Maxim Institute? I can't remember.
point is, people already getting 5/8's in wages have been humped pre-Xmas. Lets hope they all find gainful employment forthwith.

Come on it's nothing to do
Come on it's nothing to do with illegal downloads.
It's just straight up bad management.
Hey Hey, You won't want to
Hey Hey,
You won't want to know this but the bullshit that illegal downloads are destroying music shops is just that, bullshit. I know this cos my band manager own's music shop ( Dave's Basement Records 262A Onehunga Mall, Onehunga, Auckland ) is also closing down shop this december and the single reason why he's completely closing down shop isn't because of bad business practice and isn't because people are theifing their music off the net, it's simply because kids don't know music anymore. The idea that illegal downloads are destroying the music industry makes no sense when you realise that's what they said about all radio stations eighty years ago in the twenties !!! They made out that if people can listen to their favourite records on the radio they won't feel the need to buy them, which is the same argument they have now in the naughties, that if people can download their favourite records off the net, they won't feel the need to buy them. What these people forget is that this is how people get to hear their favourite records first, the only difference is that radio has died. That's why kids have turn to the net to hear their music. Radio stations like The Rock Fm, there's nothing rock'n'roll about them. They're totally corporate, they've done research they have there target markets, meeting people is easy, its bullshit. Kids know this. That's why they turned off and why to most kids, music is incomprensible or percieved to be crap. I know this because I use to work at Rock Fm (When I was 20) and why I now own my own radio station (The Shit 88Fm starting this Summer 2008). Where else are you gonna hear bands like Ac/dc, T-Rex, Hendrix, Thin Lizzy, Lenny Kravitz, Kiss ?!? Not on radio because these guys are still sticking to playing the same eighty tracks every time ( Ac/Dc You Shook Me All Night Long, T-Rex 20th Century Boy, Hendrix Voodoo Chille, Thin Lizzy's The Boys Are Back In Town, Lenny Kravitz Are You Gonna Go My Way, Kiss ( Disco Kiss Aghhhh !!! ) I Was Made For Loving You ) That why they are on the net illegally downloading alot there music is because that's the only place they will get chance to hear it ! Again thanks to radio and corporate advances, music is now to most ten, twenty year olds, incomprensible or percieved to be crap and that's why kids don't know music anymore and why I almost have to explain to almost every musician I know what a Rory Gallagher is because the supposed Rock Fm doesn't even play him or hell even not nearly enough Noel or Liam Gallagher and those guys sold over 50 Million records worldwide !!! It's so wrong ! That and breaking it down because kids don't hear enough different enough music on the radio they don't see the difference between alot music and that's what's stopping them buying music like in malls, like in Sounds and Ecm even Jb-Hi-Fi. That's why to me everything in music has gone from good to worse to dinosaur level extinction...
Totally agree, but man you
Totally agree, but man you need to learn about paragraphs, that's hard to read.
How many people do you know had dubbed cassettes in the 80's, 90's ... EVERYONE. They also said then that dubbing music was destroying the music industry. Bollox!
It's a global community and there are sooo many tools available to the individual, you just have to believe in yourself and your product.
Musicians can totally DIY on a professional level and I'm pretty sure everyone knows at least one tech geek who can help them, or they can find someone and pay them.
I reckon there is also a fair chance that those bands who are genuinely good will get further and bands that aren't will falter. But in saying that it will also be dependant on who's marketing is better, which is exactly how it is now.
Agree, but it doesn't always
Agree, but it doesn't always work like that. Lots of good bands go unnoticed. And lots of crap bands go far - mainly due to marketing.
I think this was the outfit
I think this was the outfit that was in cahoots with the fundy christian right. I seem to recall they had something on the last eminem album. They either didn't stock it, or donated the purchase price to a charity. Maybe they've been making too many donations or something. heh.
I'm slightly bitter, as I have a voucher I was about to spend. Although there was a thing in the herald recently saying that over a third of all vouchers are never spent!
No that is The CD Store
No that is The CD Store
oops. My bad. I hope sounds
oops. My bad. I hope sounds didn't go under because I was avoiding them. Not that I go to the CD Store either.
Yea same, useless voucher
Yea same, useless voucher now ... one i got for xmas actually ... and one the store sold in mid December - dodgy
One source says Sounds is
One source says Sounds is $20m in debt. That makes me wonder (stories like this always do): why don't they close down while the debts are still at a repayable level? Surely if you're $2-3m in the red and things are still looking bad, you should start to cut your losses?
Can anyone explain this one to me?
People are pathologically
People are pathologically bad at cutting their losses, especially when they start to get bigger (and where they feel the loss is their fault).
The wikipedia page on sunk cost is pretty shit... so I'll explain a little of the theory.
As losses start, the business will blame some "one off" thing, like poor christmas sales because of the sunny weather or something.
The bank manager goes "no worries, we'll let you trade out".
It turns out not to be so one; and the bank manager realises they made a bad call, but if they admit they made the bad call, and call in the loan, then they look like an idiot.
The company is probably mostly paying the interest, so there is still some money coming in, but it slowly gets worse.
The bank manager now wishes they called the loan at the earlier time point, but to call it in now further makes them look incompetent because they should have called it in earlier.
Repeat a few more times.
Yeah Hey, You're right that
Yeah Hey,
You're right that is insanely annoying to read. I'll remember to paragraph my sentences this time. That and yeah man, tapes is another thing they try to fucking talk us out of in the eighties and so desperate was the record industry in trying to recoup alot there loses in order to get congress to pass a 9% tax on blank cassettes they agree to Al Gore's wife " Tipper " anal demands of putting parental advisory warning stickers on stack cds which thanks to that is the reason why now America's Most Largest Music Purchaser 'Wall-Mart' refuses to sell alot really really good cds from Audioslave, Billy Corgan, because anything with a sticker that says parental advisory on it, they won't buy them. Thank You Jesus. Just be stoked the Warehouse didn't start up christian heartland and they will still sell cds that curse, sweet and swear on it ! Shit, ten bucks at warehouse you can get Eric Clapton's Blind Faith cd with naked fourteen year old chick on it, sticking her tits out, holding dick shaped plane, fucking kick awesome !
Its thanks to his Al Gore and his wife why I was always totally against his world aid concerts that he had on this year. This man tried to help and destroy Rock'n'Roll in the eighties and we're suppose to help him save the planet ? The planet can burn for all I care, all I'm concern about is I have certain standards I live by and that I would die before helping him man. Still I'll shut hell up. But Yeah, Blockbuster, Sounds, Ecm, Games Plus owe copious sums of money and the twenty millon dollar estimate does work on me !!! The way I think it works is that collectively the stores are twenty million dollars in debt. Cool ? There's 200 stores, that's 100,000 bucks each business owes Iconz. I know, its alot money and I fully agree that you think at $67,000 they would stop there, but hey what do you expect ?!? People are weird !!! Dude ...
Its thanks to his Al Gore

I'm so glad someone else remembers that Al Gore was a total supporter of censorship, America was so desperate to get rod of Bush that decided to ignore that fact. Al Gore is total puppet just like Bush, he is the lesser of 2 evils but still, I wouldn't vote for him.
hullo Big_Stu! Heaven forbid

Heaven forbid a shop would refuse to stock Audioslave
Uh-Huh, Heaven forbid a shop
Uh-Huh,
Heaven forbid a shop would refuse to stock Audioslave ! Is that suppose to be joke cos I'm not laughing ! It's serious thing when any shop refuses to sell any cd cos Jesus tells them it's good idea ! And it's not just Audioslave that they don't have, Ryan Adams, Lambchop, Nixon, Whiskytown, Gorillaz, there's alot student music they don't sell there and that's not good ! Would Wall-Mart think about selling something that some may not like but many others would buy ?!? Does Wall-Mart think they should leave it to the consumer to dictate spending decisions ?!? Hell No, that would be something Christ would do !!! Don't know about you guys, but yeah this is just one better than average example of how corporate america dicks with the common american, sacrificing choice for comfort. It's crap...
Actually, hell yes, they do.
Actually, hell yes, they do. Wallmart is the biggest mass market commercial business in America... and you'll never find any R18 games in any store... sounds like censorship to me.
Not so sure on the music side of things as far as Wallmart is concerned, however.
shops should refuse to sell
shops should refuse to sell anything that morally causes them problems
we as consumers or punters should then take this information as a reference to where we wish to consume.
sacrificing choice for comfort...or, ensuring the one party state continues to be the only voice heard. Clearly Audioslave's membership could cause Political offense to an institution such as Wal-Mart
jokes
sort of
it was more at AC...he's mad for Audioslave
P - I'll give you
Uh No, No, They Shouldn't
Uh No, No, They Shouldn't Dude,
It's like this, Wallmart is the Warehouse. The Warehouse ( and I don't know they are aware of this or not ) has killed off alot small music shops with being able to cost cut alot new cds. Alot guys who use to get their cds, use to get them at these small music shops cos they didn't care paying $32.95 that's what they cost everywhere and for alot small music shops that stopped selling most of there old music cos who the hell knows music now, they were totally, totally, relliant on selling alot these new cds to make up for the fact they weren't selling a thing. This is how it was when I was twenty helping out cd places around Auckland. Now it is like this where it's not just Warehouse selling cds at ridiculously cheap prices it now supermarkets, petrol stations, who thanks to their super massive size themselves are able to get cds in at much lower price than small, tiny, and insignificant cd shops could. That's not cool, cos now alot these places who are all about the money not the music are now responsible for getting people into loads and loads of different music and I don't see that happening if the Warehouse does Wallmart thing and stops selling music alot people really like.
In the end ( and here's my final point ) what if the few record shops I worked at ( Real Groovy, Dj Records, Dave's Basement Records ) like you suggested, refuse to sell records that caused us huge moral anguish ? Have you got any Hannah Montana ? Nah ! Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Robbie Williams ? Nope ! Stevie Wonder's Secret Life Of Plants ? The Pointer Sisters ? Patsy Riggar ? Captain And Tenille ? I Love The Nolans, You Know Them ? Boney M ? Kenny G ? Kenny Rogers ? Ok, take you and your weak inexcusable pathetic attempt at full and healthy life the hell away from my store ! Shit no it wouldn't work and you'll only fully end up looking like fucking dick and this is what dudes at Wallmart are doing, not doing the right thing, selling music only themselves like ! They look dicks ! They're making music look like total tool and that's not good dude, not when it's just bad attitude and jesus humping admiration that's ruining music for most americans. That and hey why does Wallmart stop at music and not other things like tenth grade science books that state man is made out of monkeys and the surface to weight ratio is insufficent for Jesus to walk on water and let Luke the Disciple fish off his shoulders all at the same time ? I don't know what it is with alot places, all I know is in place like america, when comes down to choices, decisions and letting other people decide things for you, it should be like what french phillospher Voltaire said " that I may not agree with your opinion but I will defend your right in saying it ! " That's what I've been talking about...
The Warehouse is fully aware
The Warehouse is fully aware of what it is doing.
In general, consumers do not care.
search the female Stephen Tindall or cop some back issues of North and South for a primer on NZ's WalMart
and it is quite right for any Retailer or Supplier to administer goods arbitrarily on moral factors. I think that is a pretty basic freedom and you can then make a decision on whether you will support that business as a consumer. I realize there may be accessibility issues, but I am confident if there is a will there is a way.
Real Groovy sells Skrewdriver? can I order it from them? how about Prussian Blue? Or do Moral decisions only apply when applicable with our own Political Ideology?
Me, I'd never shop at WalMart, there anti-union, anti-woman, enslave the poor way of doing business is possibly the prime example of all that is repugnant about free-market capitalism. That still don't mean I have a higher morality in demanding they stock what I want to see on the shelves.
