lost soul music is a fucking world class album. a fairly diverse content musically yet still manages to flow and pass the time away like you don't even know it's been happening. original percussion, warm bass and supersweet vocals make for the most enjoyable soak in the bath or sunday morning recovery.

nice vids too.

does anyone know whats happening - hopefully another recording is in the works?

Hi Pepsi,

There was the World Series show at the St. James in Auckland in Nov...the article about the Series in the Herald said that the artists had to come up with some money for their participation. Other than that, SJD has been working with Don McGlashan- appearing as part of a band in a Gaylene Preston film and working McGlashan's solo album. They'll be doing some shows in 2003.

I agree that Lost Soul Music is effing brilliant. My husband plays it a fair bit and Tree People gives us both a giggle. Heard the live version of "Guiding Light" on bfm and my jaw dropped. There are also other samples from the album "3" and other releases on the amplifier.co.nz site.

There is an email link on the sjd site.

Not many posts here....for one of my favourite artists....but any way the mercurial talents of SJD will be seen live with the Phoenix Foundation at Indigo bar November the 31st....hoorah

Yeah, there was word of a new album on the way, but no news on when it was to drop.

SJD are world class- saw a vid on the tele last night (the one which begins with animated childrens drawings) and it was intensely good. Apparently the new album will be out in March/April this year (just after I head off to London. Fuck.)...

...the vid was for 'A Boy' from Lost Soul Music.

I've never heard much of their stuff, if not any, so nows a good time for me to tune in.

Okay, new album (Southern Lights?) out in a few weeks. The singles off it- A to B or Not to Be and Superman, You're Crying, are IN-CRE-DIBLE. You can get your copy in London if you order through http://www.smokecds.com - easy peasy. If you are earning Pounds, it'll almost be free.

Southern Lights out now. Smoke CDs has it. Brilliant reviews. Yeah!

AAAAHHH!!! AAAAAHHHHHH!!!
SJD CD RELEASE PARTY!!! KA!!!!! FRIDAY JULY 9TH!!!!!

Soooooo coooool....been looking forward to this.

Anyone know if there's a tour around the countryside to promote the new album? Saw SJD live at the old Paramount once, one of the funniest gigs I've been to, because the guitarist hadn't plugged in or for whatever reason was making no noise, but couldn't get why the audience was gesticulating at him.

BTW, schoberlew, I know you from elsewhere, don't I?

In his excellent interview with Rhys at Radio Active, he said the tour (with a FULL band, incl. Paul Gramsci on vocals) will be underway shortly. He's in the studio at the mo' playing bass for Don McG's solo release (YEAH!!!!!!!!)
He said that in addition to the N. Island, he would hit Dunedin (lucky you, Myshkin), CHCH, and was it Q'town and Nelson? He apologized to the residents of Twizel.
He seems like a generous, funny fellow.
The interview was great, lasting some 10-15 minutes. Rhys, didn't geek out and that was nice.
Myshkin, we've chatted a few times o'er at the Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree. I asked you about Roy Cuthbert's shop and the OWeek Gig and I was the one who made it to the Cuba St. Carnival from California.

I found the first two albums a bit all over the show, and a few too many influences worn on his sleeve. Still, obviously some good things going on, and working in an area I care about. Not to mention 'Tree People' features about the only acceptable Neil Diamond sample you could have. ;)

So, how do people reckon the new one compares, both stylistically and quality wise..?

I remember his Uncharted interview after the last album and that was similarly fantastic. Yay!

HAVEN'T HEARD IT YET!!!! WHAT AM I THINKING???? (smacks head)

I've heard a few songs and they sound fantastic; a couple of them are an acquired taste (Superman you're crying took a couple of listens before I started really liking it) but that's not uncommon for me, and it's usually an indication that I'll like the music for a long time...for what it's worth...

Mind you, I really really really love Lost Soul Music, I think the songs are chosen and ordered really well; my only gripe is that a couple of tracks that may have benefitted from the less is more approach...

OK, I'm just procrastinating now.

In the Radio Active interview SJD talked about how the songs were born out of perhaps darker themes - self doubt was mentioned - and he talked about how the new songs will sound pared down when compared to his previous two.

He talked about the collaborations with Don McGlashan, David Kilgour, Anika Moa, etc. for Southern Lights. He also talked about influences growing up (Blams, the Flying Nun stable, Kraftwerk and other electronica, then Leonard Cohen, Richard Thompson, etc.)

He sang Welli's praises, too. Compared to the BFM live to air SJD did with the two hungover djs, the Active interview was pretty highbrow. (Btw, Active did an excellent interview with Ed Cake two weeks ago. Did his new release some justice, too. ). Have to wait another week or two for the mail order to arrive, but the four songs I've heard have been great - yes with different influences still evident.

Lucky Heather. Hope you have fun at the release party.

//Myshkin, we've chatted a few times o'er at the Lonely Planet's

I knew it was you from your website: the interest in tomatoes and meat pies was a dead giveaway! Not to mention the muttonbirds. Wierd that you're in the USA yet the best informed so far as to the SJD tour. Yay for online radio.

Hmm... both darker and more stripped down sound promising to me. Not that I don't love fun and happy music, but in the area of downbeat things can get nice far too quickly, IMO.

I keep wondering if I'd had the opportunity to see the live show I'd think more of SJD... It might just be one of those things where the x-factor just isn't there for me for no explicable reason... I only stop to think about it because I feel I ought to like him a lot. Probably just thinking about it too much. Maybe I should just get the new album and put it on while I do the dishes or something, rather than fret about what it's all about. ;)

I do love his horrible pun titles - 'Colin Meccano' is surely the best name for a Kiwi track.

got the album: liking it so far

So is the album worth picking up? It received top marks from the Herald, though I don't usually agree with their critics (except when it comes to the White Stripes, possibly)...

Mine turns up tomorrow, postal gods willing - I'll say something about it when I've heard it.

SJD is a fantastic musical visionary...

yes it's worth getting, totally digging it - on high rotate; spacious and warm and sweet and surprising

Postal faeries came this week and Jesstherese is absolutely right. I was surprised by how vocally driven some of the tracks are. The lyrics offer sketches of emotions that are relateable. It's very different from Lost Soul Music, more pensive on the whole, but you can tell that it's SJD. He put his guest musicians to very good use.

He even does a shout out to the Phoenix Foundation (among heaps of others) in the notes!

Worth buying if you've liked the singles so far.

BRILLIANT. Absolutely brilliant.

i for one, am fucking loving new this album.

really enjoyed the gig on friday at bodega with the inkling. sounded great.

Got a shipment of a few NZ CDs a month or so back and am enjoying 'Southern Lights' lots. I reckon it's far more natural sounding than the other albums... well, it's rammed to the teeth with production tricks and details, so I don't mean it sounds more like a live recording. I guess I'm thinking the songwriting doesn't feel forced and the album as a whole is really cohesive. I think he's synthesised his influences to make something very "him" and the fiddly bits are kept subservient to the needs of the track.

What is it with hidden tracks? This is maybe the 3rd NZ album where the untitled track at the end is my fave. Makes it really easy to tell people about it if you don't even know its name. Heh.

which other hidden tracks are those? Bottles & Jars at the end of Fur Patrol's pet is certainly one of my favs.

I've actually never listened to Fur Patrol beyond tracks I've heard on comps or the radio. Naughty me. Missed a gig of theirs on Friday night actually.

Anyway, was thinking of two Bevan Smith albums - Aspen's 'Are You That Retail Snob?' and Signer's 'Giving It Up To Feel Effected'. The latter has maybe 3 untitled tracks rolled into one track of the CD...

I was wondering what you would think of it based on your concerns back in Jul. Yeah, that Angus McNaughton does have a way with those sound flourishes. A friend in Atlanta waxes poetic about them. Track 12 is a lovely way to end the thing. I reckon it's Don McGlashan singing half the "ooohs" on bvs.

Last night's gig at Indigo with Ghostplane was excellent. Lovely warm floaty sounds and a really good atmosphere, quite relaxed but with some incredible buildups, like in 'Rising Falling Rising'. Thanks heaps!

Choice one, new material! And one song almost sounded like rock music, which was bizarre. (Most bizarre of all though was that there was this couple at the gig on saturday that looked Just like Dust and Teina. But it wasn't them. Unless Dusty was taking me for a ride, of course...)

And joy of all joys, SJD are playing at the St James next Friday with, you guessed it, Breaks Co-op. Me, I am just buzzing at the thought of it......

CHECKIT! CHECKIT! CHECKIT! I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH!!!
