It was around this time that I was being taught that New Zealand music sucked. I wasn't directly told that, but it was implied because there was virtually no NZ music on mainstream radio, and mainstream radio was pretty much the only thing available. Major exceptions to this rule were Split Enz, who were still getting the odd song on the air now and then, and Dave Dobbyn. It wasn't until years later that I found out I could have been listening to Chris Knox, the Chills, Hello Sailor, the Headless Chickens and so many others.
Strangely, it was at this time that I got into old 1950s rock'n'roll through some tapes I found lying around the house. It was a short-lived infatuation, but fun while it lasted--Elvis, Carl Perkins, Bill Haley...
