Embarrassing juvenilia for the masses!

In August 1995 an ambient outfit called MonkeyShuttle did a live-to-air performance on Radio Active. This involved me, a guy who now does stuff as Group Five, and a guy who now does stuff as Aquaboogie.

The recording of the performance is available for free download, courtesy Wellington's Angry Rabbit label and good old archive.org.

We all contributed detailed write-ups of what we remember of the night, some of which I think is a bit funny.

Here's the label page about the release:

gimme some more!!!

Wahay! Good name! Good song to have on at work too.

Hey all , if anyone out there checks this page I've put up a site finally.

New album should be out soon. Check http://www.capitalrecordsings.co.nz for that.

Excellent. Haven't heard any news from you in ages. Looking forward to the album... and maybe you'll come back to Wellington for a couple of shows?

And bring along Bevan!!!

I think I can safely let slip that I'll be playing a gig in Wellington on the weekend of March 14-16th. Probably the Sunday night. First gig in NZ since... August 2001, I think?

Last time I saw ya it was at that Ambient night at Indigo... Sound Escape, I think it was. Very cool.

Looking forward to that weekend.

Well, um, looks like that gig is not happening, but check for an interview on Active's drive show about 5pm, followed by a DJ set with Hummel from 11pm, Tuesday 11th March. Gonna be good to be back in Welli for a coupla weeks!

If anyone finds themselves up late on Sunday, I'm doing a live-to-air set on Melbourne's RRR. NZ time it'll be a bit after 2am, so maybe a bit late for a school night. :D

Still, you can stream the sucker if you like.

This will be a bit of a warm up of some of the styles I'll be playing in Welli Friday 21st.

I've chucked a new MP3 on my site, 'Mobile'. Dunno if I'll always call it that, it's just what I saved the file as when I was working on it. This is the first Jet Jaguar material I've finished in 9 months, so curious as to what people think.

I just got "Think About It Later" in the mail, and had it playing while I cooked dinner last night. All of my dinner guests agreed that it is very 'hepcat'.

Nice! Even the Herald like Jet Jaguar. I was going to link the review but they haven't put it online, el cheapos that they are.

Yeah, lucky someone scanned it for me already. :) I know artists are supposed to be hard arsed and detached about reviews, but it's rather flattering to think someone else could regard something I'd done as one of those "special" albums to cherish.

I think I even saw a mention of you in the TV Guide.

Or maybe dementia is setting in..

Hmmm. I was in a cafe/bakery vaguely near the Court of Appeal the other week and they were playing Jet Jaguar is Love....

Here's the a link to the Sunday Star Times review by Grant Smithies if anyone would like to take a read.

Apparently the stars were 4 4 and 5 for the three releases he talks about.

pretty mad review! he says nice things though, doesn't he. i must confess i haven't heard 'is love' yet but i do own 'think about it later' - i reviewed it for smokecds/thepackage - and it's GREAT. in fact i revisited it last night after being inspired by downloading 'mobile' from your link above. my favourite track is 'stone cat stone tail' - in fact that was what i wanted to tell you when i met you at sandwiches (remember the Rosie connection) only you were too busy wit yo' buttons!

Heh cheers. :) 'Stone Cat Stone Tail's a bit of a fave of mine as well.

Heya man,

Daryl played me the Elvisey remix - hehehe so much bass I thought there was an earthquake (seriously it was rattling the walls in our lounge, and he was playing it in his bedroom)... If only I could find a version of Temple of the Dog :-P

But yeah wonderful!

I love the track, Mike.

Excellent. Thank you.

Heh, no worries guys, glad it turned out alright. :)

As for the bass, I'm a shocker for that. Hope you can get someone to master it OK... contrary to popular belief you can have too much.

More over email... "48 degrees outside..."

I really want to hear this! When's it coming out?

I don't think I'm letting the cat out of the bag by saying it should appear on the next K-1500 Project EP.

6 and a bit minutes of beatlessness and wigged out guitars...

Heh - actually I'm thinking that we should release 'No Aiming Just Shooting' with some remixes at the end (should have one back from The Upbeats soon - with any luck it'll be Fistycuffs)...

But yeah it should definatley be out there - less we loose all copies of it (ala Temple Of The Dog :-)

... and I am into the idea of having the Jet Jaguar remix at the end of the (soon to be recorded) Pop EP... I think it'd fit better with pop. But K1500 will discuss this between us...

(and I will win! Grrr.)

The remix has now debuted on Radio... last Tuesday nights Deep show started with this remix.

The word is spreading.

yeehaa! feature artist of the day!
[good weekend???]

For those forum lurkers who don't read the news items:

Live Jet Jaguar / Montano on Triple J

Triple J's soundlab show is going to feature recordings of live sets from the Next Wave festival club tonight, and the show will be available to stream online until next Sunday night.

Friday night's Surgery Records showcase in Melbourne featured two sets involving me, one solo as Jet Jaguar and one as half of duo Montano. Montano make music entirely from recordings of our Melbourne environs, but edited and manipulated to form something musical. I don't know yet how much of each set is going to be broadcast, but I guess I'll find out in a few hours.!

If you would like to read an interview with Jet Jaguar online head over to Radio 1's website.

It's a fiddly Flash site, so I can't direct you straight to the interview, but find "news and events" and choose news. You'll get an interview with Little Thief, and mine is after his. I think his is probably more interesting, but Kiwis are supposed to say stuff like that eh? ;)

Yo Jet,
Any upcoming gigs? When? Where? I have been wandering the music stores of Victoria asking after you, to no avail!

No, no gigs. The gigs I have done recently have been for Montano... in fact I've spent heaps more time on that project than on solo material.

No distribution in Australia either. If you're still about, I farmed a few copies of my 'Think About It Later' CD to the following places:

Slap, Gertrude St, Fitzroy
Synaesthesia, Block Place, Melbourne (city)
Raoul's Records, Barkly St, St Kilda

If you are feeling really keen and are still around just email me directly and I'll see if I can help ya out.

I remember walking past Synaesthesia at some stage but it wasn't open. Will have another look. Any recommended places to go/people to see? I'm here until next friday.

Time for a blink / a low hum multiple login effort, methinks.

I don't know of any gigs coming up that I'd recommend. I'm keeping a low profile, trying to stop spending beyond my means. Ah the cry of the 20 something...

If you want to do a bit of shopping I'd definitely recommend a stroll round the Fitzroy / Collingwood area.. have a look at Smith St, stroll back along Gertrude (and stop in at Slap Records) and then up Brunswick. Maybe. Polyester on Brunswick has a wide selection of local music if you're up for some of that, and also sell tickets for heaps of gigs... in other words they may be more help than I am. :P

If you're with car and have $$ get up early and head out to the Healesville Sanctuary.. probably a bit over an hour each way. From memory $17 each for an adult, but worthwhile if you can make a decent day of it... and if you like looking at wildlife etc.

Is that any help at all!??

Damn hotel not letting me use the interweb in my room, only just saw your last post. Got back to Akl a few hours ago.
One of the guys at the place I was working recommended a few of the same places you did...I only really got as far as fitzroy st/st kilda one way and abbotsford the other way though.
I did find, however, collectors corner/second spin on Swanston in the city (or is it Elizabeth? I lost count of how many times I turned the wrong way thinking I was on one of the two, when I was on the other) and they had a green 12" remix of the Cure's 'A Forest'...probably not your thing, but I seriously considered going hungry for a few days to buy it before deciding not to. Regretting it now.

"Suddenly I stop..." 'A Forest' was the first riff I ever learnt to play on a keyboard. Hmm.

Found out from a friend 'Loss Apache' off 'Jet Jaguar is Love' is part of Air NZ's inflight entertainment at the moment. :) Heh.

Sorry Jet i didn't know who else to ask but, have you seen Money Mark live? and should i go, or is that too much funk for my Wednesday night?

Nah, haven't seen him and have heard no reports - he plays Melbourne on Friday or something. I'm not a big fan.

//i'm not a big fan.

neither but, i am of ill communications and check your head. haven't heard any of his solo stuff, but have read a few average reviews. Of course i asked you because you play keyboards, suppose it's like asking the tall guy if he plays basket ball huh. cheers man.

I'm playing in Sydney tomorrow night if anyone happens to be in town and is interested.

Flinders Hotel, Darlinghurst.

Scheduled 2 hour set, probably half and half jamming my tunes and DJing other people's stuff.

yo jet, bought think about it later the other day and i like very muchly. i hadn't realised that i had already heard a couple of your songs on rdu. they play you a fair bit.

cher

Cheers matey, sorry I missed this comment until now.

Melburnians lurking out there, I'll be playing Honky Tonks this Thursday as part of Ennio Styles' & Kano's Open Sesame night.

Prob half and half laptop material and records I like. I'm in no way a DJ, but, hey, you might hear some tunes you like too.

Hey. I really like you remix on Rhian Sheehan new CD. Nice!

Thanks Baba.

I did a bunch of remixes last year, but that's the only one to come out so far... Fingers crossed some of the others see the light of day.

And if you aren't aware, there's MP3s of a couple of other remixes I've done that aren't on CD on my site.

http://www.nonwrestler.com/audio.htm ]

Ah I see....I hope so too jaggy. All hail the king of little blippy squalchy siund hicups. (almost home is still my number one nz electronic tune of all time)

Choiceness! I got the OK to upload another of the remixes I have done which hasn't seen release.

Trinity Roots' 'Just Like You' off 'True'. Will let you know when it's up.
