The first thing i noted was this comment

''quote
>> Lyrics are very simple, there are no rules in it. You can write anything you want.''

This is far from the truth. Lyrics for me can make or break a song. There are many things to consider as far as lyrics go.

The site then goes on to talk about the music being the most creative part, seeming to put the lyrical content a distant second (while this is probably true of most pop songs - "Move your body/In the club/Bounce all night/Feel the love" - yea like ''that's'' original - it should not be the case).

Firstly, there's the subject matter. The song has to have something to say about something, otherwise you might as well fill it "La La Na Na's"

Then it comes down to a pairing between melodic voicing, coupled with rhythm placement of syllables, and finally the grammatical structure of the line itself.

This is not a trivial task, and any true songwriter should endeavour to take creative lyrical composition as seriously as their musical composition.

Consider the difference between these two examples, and you'll see how lyrics change everything.

''What about can't?
The inquisitor asked
To the old man
Who seemed to know
It's quite simple
He said with a grin
There is no can't
Only won't''

...And this next one taken from a very popular song…

''You had my heart
and we'll never be world apart
Maybe in magazines
but you'll still be my star
Baby cause in the Dark
You can see shiny Cars
And that's when you need me there
With you I'll always share''

What the hell is with the line ''You can see shiny Cars''? they obviously needed a rhyme for ''Star''. In the context of the verse it doesn't even fit … oh well, that's pop for you, about as deep as a 2-bit hookers' thoughts on Chaucer…

...

Right, so in closing, I'm not bagging the ''Make your own song'' website or anything like that, I just wanted to point out that lyrics ''are'' as important as music and that a site claiming to teach songwriting should also focus on how important lyrical content and creation is.

Thanks for reading.
