How important is it for a band to remain genre specific?

I'm wondering what people think about local original bands spanning genre's. Do you think bands should play one genre or do you think that a wide range of styles can/need to be included?

I'm not talking total opposite genres here - just say mixing styles such as Cold Play and The Arctic Monkeys and Chilli Peppers and Foo Fighters.

To me all these bands have separate genres and I think new bands writing their own stuff would be better off choosing a style rather than having a few songs in each camp.

Ideas? thoughts?

Forums: NZ Music,

Totally depends on the band.

Some bands can do a mix of styles and still sound like the songs were done by them.

And it depends on what the band is trying to accomplish musically. If they start in a very narrow genre, it will be hard for them to do anything other than what they started doing.

On the other hand if a band is too diverse then the music will not sound cohesive.

End of the day, art is art, and you're either going to like it or not. I feel that the *less* intellectualising at the moment of creation, the better. Then if the created music feels right to you, run with it.

You can't have a hard and fast rule about this sort of thing, otherwise you're trying to force creation into something that it may not be.

Be honest with what your doing, if it doesn't fit, or it sounds shit, then throw it away, and create something better.

Yeah Hey,

You Know Me. I Have No Problem With Genre's Cos Any Guy That Thinks He Doing Something Original, ' My Music Can't Be Categorise ', I Am ' Artist ', Is Bullshiting Themselves !!! All Music Can Be Categorise ! That's Why Shops Have Them ! It's Because It Doesn't Matter How Many Insane Crazy Genre's Of Music Your Band Takes In, It's Still Art Jazz, Punk, Post Punk, Pre Industial Post Punk, New Wave / Punk Etc. Which I Admit Is Both Bogus And Strange That Even Genre Crossing Bands, Have There Own Genre. It's Called Prog !!!!!! ;-)

What genre was Scott Walker's last album?

Ahhhhhh Scott Walker ?!?

The Walker Bothers Guy ?!? Guy Who Fucking Famously Made Four / Five Great Albums In Two Years At End Of Sixities ?!? The Guy Who Was Especially Famous For Effortlesly Blending Jazz, Rock, R'n'B, Stak Records Soul, Funk, Blues Together ?!!? Yeah Dude Was Prog ...

I don't think it matters. Look at say, Beastie Boys.
I think as an artist, limiting yourself would be like cutting of a couple of fingers.
But at the same time, if writing the same song over and over works for you - then so be it :)

I guess it depends on the intent of the musicians, maybe they cross a lot of genres because they feel an audience will have a more diverse and enjoyable experience... maybe they enjoy the challange it presents to them selves to write in such a way?

I agree it can sound a bit daft if not done well, then there is the whole aspect of trying to associate things and put them in a box, we want a band to have a foundation to there sound that we can associate to them... and if it keeps changing that connection gets broken. I don't know, at the end of the day its the band them selves that put in all the hardwork, time, effort, practice and money so they pretty much can do what they like.
