Hot Swiss Mistress are a three piece based in Wellington, but all hail originally from the Wairarapa - which may explain why this 6-song mini-album includes a paean to Foxton, 'The Foxtown of New Zealand', located just a short stretch up the highway.
Frontman and guitarist Warner Emery, plays bass in local favourites the Phoenix Foundation, so it's no surprise that this album is planted firmly in the indie rock crooner camp, with a healthy dose of old-school Flying Nun thrown in for good measure. But more than just the sum of its members' other bands - bass player Rhys used to drum for the much rockier Paselode, for example - Hot Swiss Mistress have a character that makes their folk-pop tunes defiantly their own, full of swooning guitar and wry songwriting and there's even a whistling solo!
Sweet, clever and with a low-key production that suits the band's style, The Falling Stars stakes HSM's claim to the local guitar heroes' crown - definitely one to watch.
