Driven by soul searching vocals, Tahuna Breaks’ unique combination of funk fuelled grooves, reggae & just a hint of drum n’ bass has seen them become a favourite on dance floors across NZ, after opening for such top Kiwi bands as Fat Freddy’s Drop, Concord Dawn, Sola Rosa & One Million Dollars & even grace the small screen, on Top of the Pops.
Having formed early in ‘05, the AK-based band is on the cusp of a new nationwide tour {check our ‘On Tour’ section for more details on the dates}, celebrating the release of their debut album ‘Reflections’.
So what’s in a name? Well, as much as they’d love to have a story prepared about Tahunas in NZ, their name comes from the street in AK’s Freeman’s Bay where they first began practicing. And while ‘Reflections’ has a fairly deep meaning behind it’s name, the core of the album mirrors the upbeat, positive attitude the band carries with them.
Tahuna Breaks are not only a group of talented musicians playing together to make good music, they have a passion & desire to produce the best they can, all the while having a fun time while they’re doing it - so you do while you’re listening!
While some of the songs on ‘Reflections’ remain cryptic to all but singer Marty Greentree, he says that everyone can relate to the lyrics & take their own meaning for them. The tracks vary from dub-laced rock, bluesy ‘80s funk inspired riffs, slow seductive grooves & trademark sweet reggae riddims, drawn together by Greentree’s infectious vocals.
‘Reflections’ is an album that highlights the talent & cohesion of Tahuna Breaks & the honest & upbeat Kiwi attitudes that make the band who they are. One that will be heard at bbq’s throughout our impending summer, for sure!
