Buy - Eagle Vs. Shark Soundtrack Here
Review
Soundtrack to Taika Waititi's fantastic new film Eagle vs. Shark - a "romantic-comedy New Zealand style". And like the movie, the soundtrack is suitably quirky, offbeat and charming thanks in no small part to contribution from our very own Phoenix Foundation. Many of the tracks featured have that chipper "Maori-strum" feel that immediately exudes an optimistic Summery vibe that suits the film's imagery to the ground. Interspersed with humourous film dialogue from lead characters Lily (co-writer Loren Horsley) and Jarrod (Flight Of The Conchords' genius Jemaine Clement).
As mentioned The Phoenix Foundation dominate the soundtrack with a mixture of album tracks (including old faves 'Going Fishing' and 'Hitchcock') and some previously unreleased pieces scored especially for the soundtrack. While it's worth the price of admission alone just to hear some new Phoenix Foundation material, other local luminaries such as Age Pryor and The Reduction Agents also appear not to mention a couple of international names in M. Ward and The Stone Roses popping up as well (no doubt thanks to the film being picked up by major player Miramax), without sounding at all out of place with our local boys and girls.
A very well selected mix of songs, this soundtrack works well as a stand-alone album while still evoking images of the film, which surely has to be a sign of a successful project. Eagle vs. Shark is destined to be a cult favourite, up there with other offbeat comedies like Napolean Dynamite and Rushmore and the same could be said about the soundtrack.
